A blend of 1/3 young beer and 2/3 of beer aged 2 years in large oak vats. The more important proportion of oak matured beer contributes to its fruity taste, complexity and intensity. The finish is worthy of a great wine.

Bottle at home, from the Bottle Shop - Brugge, 22/01/13. Night of the (re-arranged) Rodenbach Grand Cru mass online tasting. Pours a lightly hazed deep crimson brown with a thin off white swirl of film and some bubbles at the edge of the glass. Still looking but inviting. Nose is wood, sour cherries, light fruity balsamics, tarte figgy jam. Taste comprises soured cherries, sweet and tarte red berries, sharp raspberries, some sugars, grandads shed, damp wood. Medium bodied, light spritzy carbonation, tarte and dry in the finish. Overall a great Flemish red!

Very tart but also punctuated with a strong fruity taste. This definitely isn’t a beer for everyone, but I love it.

09/13/2014 - From bottle in tulip glass. $5 (!) for 750ml @ Costco. Effervescent, hazy mahogany, very thin off-white lacing. Sour aroma of tart cherries and bread. Fruity taste of cherries and some berries. Tart acidity very prevalent but not overpowering. A bit oaky on the the back of the tongue. Dry finish. Great beer to share just about any time. Well balanced, accessible sour with good availability. Stock up if you find it cheap.

On tap at Erzbierschof. Beautiful dark ruby color with nice foam. Aroma is sweet-sour, fruity (apples, cherries, nonripe gooseberries), nicely complex. Taste is both sour and sweet, but not too sour. Awesome complex finish with a little caramel or honey. Great mouthfeel, medium carbonation and body. Very balanced. One of my favourites!
