COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Rodenbach Vintage is the unique result of selection by our Rodenbach brew masters, the barrel after two years of maturation has produced the best beer, "the best barrel of the year". The label is always the number of barrel stated and the year which marks the beginning of maturation.

Rodenbach Vintage is 100% matured old beer, resulting in superior Rodenbach Grand Cru. Its taste is complex, round, intense and refreshing. Typically, the apple tart fruitiness combined with caramel, wild honey and oak with a hint of vanilla, cherry and licorice. Its aroma has hints of caramel and oak, as well as notes of green apples mixed with honey and chocolate. The soft sour, fruity aftertaste is long and nicely balanced like a grand cru wine.

Ingredients: water, barley malt, corn, hops.

I liked it. Maybe I even loved it. But it lacked the intensity and the complexity of its non-vintage siblings. Maybe the 2007 is just a hair too old now? I don’t know... But at almost twice the price of the standard grand cru it is a bit insipid. Yes, same oak tartness, same fresh strawberry sweetness, same malt and vinegar and it sounds great. Dark copper pour, small head, all the right stuff. But at twice the price, with a little less complexity, it was a disappointment. Dinged it a point for the price.

Vintage 2012 from LCBO. Warm reddish brown with whitish head that disappeared quickly leaving a rim of bubbles. Aromas of vinegar, malty apples, oak, absolutely great. Classic sour flavours of apples, caramel. Phenomenal.

2009 vintage from a 750ml bottle. A clear dark red beer with a small off-white head. Nose has notes of tart cherries, brown sugar, acetic acid, lemony citrus, vanilla and oaky Cabernet red wine. Palate is smooth and vinous with sweet red fruit flavours at the front and a gently sour dry finish at the end. Aftertaste has woody red wine notes. A beautifully complex woody vinous Flemish red ale with a sourness that is gentle and refreshing and an ABV that is hardly noticeable. Well matched to a creamy blue vein cheese.

750 ml bottle from LCBO. 2012 vintage. Pours a deep red-brown, nice off white head. Nose is tart, wine, raspberries and oak. Lively carbonation. Taste is tart, crisp, refreshing and fruity. The finish is dry and definitely has oak character and Concord grape. Everything works well together.

Vintage 2009, 750ml bottle. Hazy dark amber color, poor tan head, disappear quickly. Aroma is oak barrel, wine, small acidity, dried fruits. Taste has great balance, sour and sweet. Very vionous, luscious with tart finish. In aftertaste small bitterness and tart fruits like blackcurrant. Body is medium, oily texture and average carbonation. This beer is excellent, complex and enjoyable.

It’s been a while since I’ve had the orginial Rodenbach, thanks to our massive monopoly here in Ontario, but I’ve always enjoyed it. Was highly looking forward to this 2012 vintage. The whole province looks like it’s going to sell out in a little over a week. The nose is sour grapes, a touch of vinegar, and a little grape display drink crystals. The taste is more astringent than I suspected it would be. Lots of red wine, some vinegar to put a little pucker in your puss, a little sweet under the whole thing. It’s good. But a little hash stand-alone. But killer with burgers.
