3.6 AROMA 4/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 15/20 SSKD814 (854) - Pennsylvania, USA - APR 8, 2010
A- Dark ruby red body with thin foamy off-white head that has great retention. No lacing is left behind in the glass.
S- Strong acidic vinergar aroma with hints of sour cherries. Smell was somewhat unpleasant to me.
T- very complex. Tart sour cherries upfront with deep malt backbone. Then the acidity hits and is quite overwhelming. Finish is very plesent. Fruity cherry aftertaste that is both sweet and sour with some breadiness lingering.
P- very smooth with some light carbonation. Body is somewhat syrupy.
O- This was good and a unique brew. I will have it again. The smell kinda turned me away and one every once in awhile is probably good enough.

Bottle at the Valley, Scarborough. Brown-rouge colour, with a vinegar nose. Not as powerful and deeply sour as the Grand Cru, but built from the same stock, like a younger brother. Sweetness blend well with the sour edge and it’s very drinkable and cleansing. Delicious.

A nice Flanders Red. I really enjoy the tartness of Flanders Reds, and this beer mutes these flavors a bit with the oak-aged part of the beer’s blend. Tartness and oak are a bit muted. The mouthfeel is gently fizzy and sticks very pleasantly on the palate. The flavor is generally tart, in a fairly gentle way, with light sour cherries and oak notes in the background. There is a bit of vinegar in the aroma. It’s very drinkable, but, of course, it’s not a cheap beer. Anyway, it’s a very nice sour that is on the more easily likable end of sours.

Instead of spending this St. Patrick’s drinking stout as numerous others in the past, I decided to opt for sours. Good choice. Bottle pours a slightly murky red-brown with a dusty khaki head that never quite fades. Aroma is amazing, showing tart apple, sour pomegranate, musty tea, and that beautiful rodenbach funk. Everything and more is there in the flavor supported by a doughy malt backbone. As I drink this, I can definately understand how people relate this to a wine, since it certainly shares some similar character traits at times. Overall body is light to moderate and is nicely balanced between sweet fruit and sour acid without becoming too extreme in either direction. I would drink this anytime.
