3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20 Stuedmaster (57) - San Diego, California, USA - MAR 14, 2010
Dark reddish brown with a slight off white head. Smells of sour apple, sour cherry,& oak. The sweet and sour is well balanced, making for a very refreshing beer. There is the right amount of bitterness to balance the flavor as well. It is medium bodied with lively carbonation and thin texture. This is a very unique and enjoyable beer, nice for a change.
4.4 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20 rand (740) - SWITZERLAND - MAR 8, 2010
Bottle 33 cl from Carrefour in Herstal (B).
Vinous red-brown and tangy. Sour nose. Beer well balanced between sweetness and acidity. Notes of walnut and wood. Balsamic flavor and brown sugar, it is refreshing. Trend towards Xeres with light sourness then sweetness. A wonder, i like.
3.3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 11/20 GT2 (3420) - Washington DC, USA - FEB 28, 2010
On tap at Brickskeller. Pours a muddy deep brown with a thin to non-existent head that leaves some wispy lacing. Aroma is sour Flanders red with some oak, balsamic vinegar, cheap red wine, some sour candies. Taste is effervescent with a sweet and sour combo that feels like it is made from sweet-tarts. Not a very refined Flanders red but certainly easy to drink, unoffensive, and a nice intro into sours.
3.6 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 13/20 Yves (1553) - Turnhout, BELGIUM - FEB 27, 2010
Brown coloured beer with medium off-white head and no visible carbonation. A sour malty aroma with touches of oak. Full sparkling and bit sour palate. Finish is sour sweet with touches of oak again. Good one.
3.2 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20 Hopper (751) - The Alamo, Texas, USA - FEB 26, 2010
An unclear reddish brown beer with a good head. The aroma had sweet & sour vying for position. The taste was sweet, fruity with a slight sourness that drops off to a watery end that is refreshing. This is the least sour, sour ale I’ve had.
3.6 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20 crowderm (315) - Columbus, Ohio, USA - FEB 24, 2010
Reddish brown pour with an off-white head. Aroma of sour fruit, vinegar, leather. When the beer is very cold, and freshly poured, the flavor is a little odd. Begins with a nice sweet/sour dynamic in the vein of the Duchesse, but then abruptly transforms into a bready, doughy malty mess. This transition becomes less harsh as the beer airs out a little bit, and ends up being pretty good overall. Medium bodied, relatively lively carbonation. Palate is almost a 4, but not quite. A tasty beer.
3.2 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 12/20 Kestral (487) - Årnes, NORWAY - FEB 24, 2010
0.25cl bottle. Pours a dark, deep reddish orange with a small tan head that quickly fades. Vanilla, slight vinegar and wood on the nose, a bit like a rosé, but with a malt base. Berries and fruit, perhaps cherries. A bit of a dusty and grainy flavour, with the malts too pronounced for my liking, tastes a bit like malt drops in the middle before the sourness takes over. Mildly sour, not a tongue curling ordeal at all. Light body, light sparkly carb. Alright I guess, but I must say I’m a bit disappointed.
3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20 womencantsail (3572) - Home of Rebecca Black, California, USA - FEB 23, 2010
A: The pour is a muddy brown color with very little to no head.
S: The nose is the classic Flanders Red ale. A pleasantly acidic and mildly acetic, sour cherries, and a bit of oak.
T: A lot of sour cherry flavor mixed with sweet malt. The acidity is pleasant and refreshing without too much vinegar character.
M: Medium in body with an initially high level of carbonation that seems to die down a fair amount throughout the pour.
D: A very refreshing and mildly acidic Flanders Red. While the appearance might not be the most appealing, this is still a nice beer.
