While not as enduring as its Grand Cru counterpart, I’ll admit, there are instances in which this more mellow classic is more suitable for the occasion. I suspect it would still age incredibly well, and I’d like to give that a try as soon as I can track a few bottles down here in Colorado (my new home).

Bottle - 250ml. Hazy brown/copper body with low carbonation and an average off-white foamy head. Strong malty/hoppy aroma with fruity hints. Taste is sharp and well balanced. It carries sour fruity notes. Ends with a short but sharp sour finish. Good stuff.

UPDATED: DEC 28, 2008 I adore this beer. I have a huge affinity for sour things and this beer is like a gift from god. It pours a rich brown, and the aroma is very sour with hints of earthy berries. The flavor is heavenly. Rich, smooth, sour, just the right amount of tartness. Hints of currants, cranberries, and figs permeate the taste of this beer. It has a vinuous character to it, which makes its palate quite complex. If you like sour ales, seek this out.

Bottle 25cl. Pours red-brown, no head. Mixture of red fruits, grapes. Champagne-like finish, fizzy, sour. Nice bouqet, a very special beer.

Very nice deep red body with a dissipating soapy head. Nose is very fruity and cherry like, some spice, some sweet maltiness. Taste is the same, slightly tart, more sweet. similar to NG Belgian Red, oddly enough. Very refreshing.

Big beige lasting head. Deep dark red translucent body with carbonation. Sweetish caramelly wooden aroma with acidic notes. Sharpish caramelly wooden taste with spicy, peppery notes. Some residual sweetness. Sour metallic vinuous aftertaste lasts forever. Very nice, and more drinkable than the cru. (0.25l bottle shared with gr0ve.)

250ml bottle (BelgianShop) 5.2%
Deep reddy brown, small loose beige head. Rich sharp fruity, berry, and grapey winey aroma. Pleasant carbonation, but does feel a little watery in the mouth. Subtle sourness, woody, some harsh spiky ester peak accompanies that woodiness. Softly apple grape/raisin fruity component too. Finish is sweet malt and a little sourness, but leaves me wanting more.
