UPDATED: MAY 3, 2011 I like this beer when i go to the coast (classic with a bowl of unpealed shrimps). Indeed a refreshing beer. Very interesting is a vertical taste with the 3 RB beers.

"this was the weakest and thinnest of the 4 sours (and one wild ale) we had last night, but it’s not a bad beer, just a little tamer or less complex than the others. bown in color, nice fairly aromatic flavor...a touch spicier, and not as sour as the others, but again...something i wouldn’t ever mind drinking."

Bottle from Mam and Dad’s holiday, France and Rehills, Newcastle. A dark brown cloudy beer with ruby red highlights. It has a strong flavour slightly sour cherries, creamy red fruit and vinous notes with a tart sugary sweet finish.

Bottle from Bottles and Cans. Pours a reddish brown with a tan head leaving light spots of lace. Aroma has cherries, fruits - sour - light vinegar. Taste is fruity, sour cherries, some sweet malts, berries. Medium bodied. Finishes more tart than sweet, but mixed. Decent fruit brew. 13.8

The archetypical "Flemish red", a remnant from ancient times still alive today and one of the references in Belgian beer culture. Light yellowish beige, creamy, regular, medium thick, stable head, colour dark brown red with cherry red glow, clear. Complex aroma of passion fruit, redcurrant, gooseberry, sweet sherry, caramel, honey, wine vinegar, subtle hint of wood. Very fruity, estery and sweet caramelly onset, becoming tart and dryish, refreshing, with the play of sweet and sour continuing into the finish, where a vague bitterness and very subtle woodiness also make their appearance. Of the lower ABV session beers in Belgium, this belongs to the most complex; Palm took over the brewery in 1998 and this beer changed a bit after that: a side by side tasting of a pre-1998 and a contemporary sample revealed the original was softer, more mellow and just as tart, but in a slightly more rounded, elegant way; it also had a somewhat fuller, creamier mouthfeel and a bit darker colour with a more ruby red glow. This rating, however, concerns only the current version.

Copper clear with poor brown head. Aroma is rich: a lot of red fruits - cherries, raspberries, jam. Dubbel-like esters. Sour and funky, wild notes, caramel, a bit of vanilla. Taste is sour something between cherry and vinegar. There is also note reminding cherries in liquor. Medium body, pretty high carbonation. Bitterness medium-low. Refreshing and drinkable. /// Miedziane klarowne z ubogą, brązową pianą. W zapachu mnóstwo czerwonych owoców: wiśni, malin, dżem. Dubbleowe estry. Nuty kwaśne i dzikie, karmel, lekka wanilia. W smaku zdecydowana wiśniowo-octowa kwaśność. Jest też taka nuta kojarząca się z wiśniami w likierze. Ciało średnie, nasycenie spore. Goryczka średnio-niska. Orzeźwiające i pijalne.

Butelka 0.33L
Wygląd: Ciemnomiedziane/brunatne. Średnia, jasnokremowa piana. Niewielki lacing.
Aromat: Słodowy, lekko kwaśny, miodowy. W porównaniu do grand vru zdecydowanie słabszy, delikatniejszy.
Smak: Lekko kwaśne, wiśnia, lekko cierpkie. Końcówka słodsza i czekoladowa.

Bought a six pack. First bottle seemed to have very little life; weak taste and carbonation. The second was better and by the time I finished the 3rd, I had become a fan. I think I was just used to stronger Belgian beer and was comparing it to them. What I initially called weak, I’ll now change to smooth with very little noticeable hop taste (or alcohol taste for that matter). Aroma is of tart cherries, Appearance is a pleasant red, with minimal foam. It’s a sweet beer with a sour kick on the end. Overall a good beer and affordable for a Belgian import. I find it pairs well with Edam cheese.

It looks to be a murky shade of reddish brown with effectively nil head but some good beads of carbonation. No prizes for its appearance, but I’m not so shallow that I would write this beer off because of it. Fresh, sour aromas of fruits and caramel. Good estery aromas. The flavour is tart and refreshing with cherryvite, nectarine and juicy red cherries. Lovely stuff.
