3.4 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
Bottle @ home. Clear brown to dark red color (when held into the light), average sized beige head. Smell malts, raisins, lightly roast. Taste malts, dark malts, lightly roasty but that flavor is quickly gone, raisins, quite bitter. Medium to full body, medium carbonation. This beer for me personally would be a 3.3-3.4 score but for a doppelbock -which I don’t really like in general- I think it’s a pretty good beer. I know we’re not intended to rate stylewise, so I won’t do it either. But for people who like this style I think the beer is worth a 3.7 at least.

3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
330 ml bottle poured into a snifter, ABV 7%
Deep red brown colour on the body, with light ruby shades when light hits it. Light brown head, something more than one finger, with good density and average retention, leaving light lacing on the glass.
Aroma is great, lots of cocoa, roasted malts, chocolate.
Taste quite follows, milky chocolate with a light acidity that balances the sweetness. Quickly those turn on the aftertaste to roasted malts and coffee with a medium lasting bitterness. Some spicy notes every now and then. Really great!
Very thick and full body, good amount of carbonation.
Overall a great beer, Rodenburg seems to raise the bar again.

4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
On tap at Arendsnest. Not a great fan of bocks in general, but seeing it’s the season and there were so many available, I figured I would try one. I asked the bartender for his favorite and I was not disappointed. Deep amber brown pour (hazy) with abundant frothy off-white foam that leaves sheets of lacing. Aroma is pretty subtle, clean toasted grain aroma, very bright and fresh, subtle dried fruits, very delicate. Taste is much more powerful, a nice mouthful of chewy roasted malts, quite bitter with only a silver lining of caramel sweetness, pretty awesome, so tasty. Palate is smooth and velvety, medium carbonation with medium-full body that remains super quaffable. Impressive.

3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Clear red amber colour, off-white head. Aroma of caramel, melanoid malt, liquorice, laurierdrop, malts. Light bitter flavour, laurierdrop, quite dry. Malty. Quite full body. Caramel finish, burned sugar, liquorice. Feels like a crossover between a barleywine and a bitter. I don’t quite like bocks in general, but.. I’ll have another bock please! Nice!

2013 edition (7.5%, so I’m filing it under this one). Dark red-brown color. Small beige head with some retention & lacing. Aroma’s: sweet dark malts, red fruit, also roasted malts and laurel/drop retronasal. Flavor is moderate sweet and somewhat roasted, drop. Fairly full bodied. Finishes with heavy roast, ash even, and a soft bitterness. Interesting.

Bottle at In de Wildeman, Amsterdam, vintage 2010, bb 30-09-12
Black color, creamy head. Good caramelly beer, with some chocolate, to which the aging added depth and not oxidisation; shades of liquorice. Notes of Porto wine.
Mature and complex.
