Small dark orange-tan head over virtually black beer. Smoked, smoked wood, salty, dark malts, even smoked mackerel. Smoked in the flavour as well, woody, bitter chocolate, burning logs. Very well-bodied, viscous, warming & rewarding. I’m impressed! This ranks easily amongst the best porters I’ve ever tasted.

On tap at T’Arendsnest, Amsterdam, Netherlands on Friday 30.09.11 Thick, heavy black beer with a light beige head. There is definately some peatiness going on here, there is also some spirit, though it is not too heavy or overpowering. Nice roasty cappuccino, with some spent coffee grains aplenty. Nice beer. Bottle traded with Borresteijn. Thanks a bunch! As my rating no. 4500. It pours pitch black with a creamy tan head. The aroma is hard roasted malt, light peat, liquorice and bitter coffee. The flavour is roasted and bitter with strong notes of liquorice and bitter coffee. Long bitter roasted finish. Very nice.

Bottle from Bierkoning. Jet black with a decent tan head and moderate carbonation. Massive aroma of charred malts, seas slat and bitter chocolate. Full, almost oily mouth feel, with more chocolate, salts and a dry finish. Unusual and very good.

Bottle shared at a tasting at Beer Market Jaffa. Thanks Douberd for this bottle! Black-colored with a small light brown head. Nice aroma of roast, smoke (a bit meaty), a bit of coffee and a dark chocolate note. Bittersweet flavor with roast, smoke, a bit of coffee, a light chocolate note and a light sourish hint. Medium-bodied, quite rounded. Good.

(Bottle, Arendsnest, Amsterdam, 26 July 2013) Black colour with foamy, brown head. Malty, roasted nose with espresso, dark chocolate, soy sauce and liquorice. Malty, roasted taste with notes of liquorice, soy sauce, black rye bread, hints of ashes, oak wood and a certain roasty bitterness in the finish. Almost full body, with balanced sweetness. Complex, tasty and well balanced stout. Very nice.

In short: The most peaty beer I’ve ever had. That simple. A fun beer.
How: Tap at ’t Arendsnest, Amsterdam
The look: Black body topped by a small beige head
In long: Nose is very peaty, some earthy forest floor, a bit smoky. Taste is peat, more peat and then some more peat. Also plenty of burnt malts providing a harsh roastiness, some cacao powder and a cigarette butt sensation. This is probably the most peaty beer I have ever had. I enjoyed it because it was so over the top in a different way, but in all honesty it wouldn’t be something I would enjoy so much if beers like that were to become commonplace. This was like drinking slightly smoked earthy peat. Quite enjoyable because it pushes the ‘peat’ character to the maximum. This beer is to peaty beer what a Shlenkerla is to smoked beers. I liked it and for what it’s worth my wife absolutely loved it. My last beer of the night in Amsterdam, then it was time for the walk back to the hotel. And even if they don’t make drunk-staggering an Olympic sport soon I will not regret the rigorous training I’ve put myself through.
