(If you are a fan of smokey scotch, you’re going to love this one) Aroma of smoking peat, toasted malts, toffee, with hints of dark dried fruit. Pours a hazy brown with amber highlights and a none lasting tan head providing no lacing. The taste is overall on the bitter astringent side. (Pleasingly so.) A smokey peaty flavor initially, followed malts, woodiness, some bitter notes and just a hint of a sweet fruit finish. The aftertaste is peaty. Medium body with medium carbonation. Overall, this was a very nice surprise! Great aroma and a wonderful complex flavor. Should have bought two more bottles.

Bottle. Pours a dark brown with garnet highlights. The head is tan and fine-grained. The nose is complex, with tea, toffee, smoke, malted milk, and a touch of dark fruit in the mix. Very smoky on the palate, with definite iodine and seaweed notes -- more like an Islay scotch than some beers I’ve had aged in whisky barrels (I’m looking at you, Brewdog). Astringent and drying on the palate, but paradoxically generous and wide. An amazing beer.

Bottle thanks to my secret Santa. Pours a clear deep amber with a deep grayish brown head that lasts. Aroma has a light smoke note with sweet grains backed by earthiness and a hint of light fruit. Flavor has light peat with earthy but sweet grains and just a bit of toffee towards the finish.

According to the bartender, this is brewed with peated malts and has a distinctive Scotch flavor. Let’s see about that. This is a very dark beer that’s just thin enough to allow a slight, dark red hue to shine through. The aroma is a nice culmination of soft, roasted malts, British in style, and a definite smoky peat presence. I really like the smoke. Alot. To the bartender: it tastes more smoky to me than Scotch. It has a very strong smoked malt flavor that reminds me of a solid, woody Rauchbier. I really like this! It has a relatively thin mouth feel and a flavor that’s dominated by smoked malts and a hint of peat. Otherwise, there’s nothing much else to it. The finish is clean, as smoky as this is, with a light malt body and gravity, thanks very much to the yeast, whichever strain was used. It’s a thin, Americanized version of a Scotch ale that (other than the thin body) still echoes the traditions of Scotch ales. This is a pleasure to drink, and as beefy as the smoke factor is, is really easy on the palate. Then again, I love smoke.

Black pour with a cream head. Nose is smoke, beef, BBQ, light peat, more smoke. Easy palate, BBQ, smoke, caramel, peat, beef, and more smoke.

Smells like plastic. Dark mahogany color. Tastes like roasted malt and burned plastic. Palate too light of a mouth feel for a scottish ale.

Smell is peaty and quite smoky. The appearance is my favorite part of this beer, very dark brown with nice head. The taste is overly peaty and smoky, to the point of discomfort.
