COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Ales have been brewed in Germany for 3000 years and Alt is the ale that has long defined Dusseldorf. AltBier means "old beer" and describes an ale fermented cold with an ale yeast, then aged near the freezing point. This Alt is brownish-amber in color, medium bodies with a firm malt character and backed with high hop bitterness. AltBier measures in at: OG = 12.7 degrees plato, TG = 3.1 degrees plato, IBU are around 55. Fermentation temperature = 55 degrees using Pacman Yeast. German Pilsner, Vienna Caramunich and Carafoam Special malts; German Spalt and Oregon Crystal hops. Unfiltered, Unfined, and Uncompromised ~ prost!

Bottle drank at Max’s in Baltimore Caramel brown color, creamy off-white head, nose of light sweet malt, some hop and a bit of fruitiness. The flavor is lightly bitter, nice body and the typical blasse pacman yeast taste. The finish is a bit creamy, but resoundingly uninteresting.

Draught - It’s the right color with a huge tan head. Smells less roasted and more hoppy than traditional style but that is to be expected. Pretty hoped for an alt with a bit of roastedness coming through at the end. Not an alt except by color description and maybe grain bill. But still a decent beer that would also be a good session beer.

Draught sample at The Brew Kettle in Strongsville, OH, early August 2006. Dark near-opaque caramel color with a lasting bit of off-white head....caramel malts fight with thick PNW hops in the nose, allowing faint hints of cherry and dry orangepeel through...surprisingly bland and watery on the tongue, very low carbonation, little malt presence and the hops kill everything that could possibly make you think of an altbier. Which as far as I can tell, this isn’t.

Draft at the Mellow Mushroom Carmel Rd. Eh, part of the John Locker Stock lineup. Not really that good. I asked for a sample of it, and I didnt think enough of it to even finish the sample. Brown yellow color, some hops, some malts, not really much going on here. The foothills I drank was way better, more flavor and more body to it than this. Probably not something I will revisit.

Draught@Redbones, Boston. Some nice subtle nuttyness, with soome lightly dry grassy hops in the finish. very drinkable, but it feels very ironed out, and quite clean, which is probably a good thing, but i think something is missing from this alt. Its a very drinkable alt though.

Tap: Pours a clear mahogany color. Taste is of a little water malt back ground with a bitter finish. The hops are very prolific in this beer, but nto in a bad way.

24.07.06 Tap at Hop Devil Grill. Kudos to whoever at HDG decided to bring in this winner of an alt. The stuff is alt-colored (ha!), a dingy copper with dirty beige head. Overall, it’s dry, malty, and simple with plenty of my favorite black pepper notes highlighting the generously earthy hop profile. Spicy, stark, and lovely.

Draft at Rich O’s. Pours a murky amber with a full off-white head. It has a very malty aroma, almost breadlike. The flavor is very malty but closes with a slightly bitter hop finish. Not a bad beer, but not a great one either. I think I have found a style I really do not care for.
