Beard beer is brewed with a yeast created from Brewmaster John Maier’s beard. No need to freak out, brewers have used wild yeasts in beer making for centuries. John has had the same old growth beard since 1978 and for over 15,000 brews, so it is no great surprise that a natural yeast ideal for brewing was discovered in his beard. What does bread beer taste like? try it, we think you’ll be surprised...

Salmoniform (1002) - Sweet Home, Oregon, USA - OCT 13, 2013
Poured from tap to glass. Golden/Orange with nice white head. Aroma is malt-based with slightly subtle farmhouse essences of grass and pepper. Medium hopped with decent bitterness. Light bodied mouthfeel with good carbonation. Light malt up front with hop bittering following. Finishes with a slight CO2 sharpness and light esters. Overall, a pretty average ale but worth the novelty knowing that I’ve consumed a beer fermented from wild yeast in John’s beard.

Vaguely belgian aroma - powdery, pale lager in there too. Clear. Big stiff head, scary Duck Dynasty type on the painted bomber label. Mildly fruity, lightly sweet. Nothing special, but pretty well balanced. Thx to PorterPounder for splitting his bomber with me.

Pours clear golden with a medium off white head. Aroma of yeast, malt, vegetables and herbs. Flavour is moderate sweet and bitter. Medium bodied with light carbonation.

Conyers, GA - Sigman Bottle Shop - 22 oz bomber. Medium orange pour, slightly murky, white head. Aroma has some hints of dates,some scuppernong grapes. Flavor is chewy with some accents of dates, a touch of chocolate, some apricot fruitiness. Thickish mouthfeel. Pretty solid. Enjoyed with Aurelius as a warm-up to the Whole Foods Brews and Bites event.

On draft at Falling Rock in Denver. Pours a cloudy gold with an off white head. Banana aroma. Flavors of butterscotch. Smoot slightly bitter finish.

This tastes mostly like the Recent hybrid beer people were doing, the Belgian pale.light and bubbly with some fruitiness before a relatively dry finish.

Pour out of 22 oz bottle, slightly hazy orange pour with thin white head, aroma brought notes of esters, earth, slight honey, vanilla, biscuit and bread. Taste is a mix of earth, grain, biscuit, slight fruity and spicy black pepper, hints of bubblegum, pear, finishing slightly grassy, honey, sweet.

On draft at the Happy Gnome. As a microbiologist, I had to try this experiment. Now, for all the grossness that this beer represents, lessons of microbial ecology tell us that much (maybe most, maybe all) of the yeast present in this dude’s beard comes from where he spends most of his time - at work. It would be interesting to compare this strain to those commonly used at the brewery (comparing a number of genetic loci with sequencing) to see if the strain is really from the beard or just a resident hitchhiker from the brewery. Oh ya, the beer was actually pretty decent. Slightly funky, nice hops and a fun beer.

tap at sam’s blue light. Pretty straightforward belgian ale. thankfully not too sweet. not hoppy or bitter either but the balance was on point for an Americanized version.

Yellow, medium body with flavors of fruit, bread, and floral hops. Medium body, easy drinker that came off to me more as a pale lager with wild yeast. Great idea by the brewers at Rogue for this unique beer.
