Beard beer is brewed with a yeast created from Brewmaster John Maierís beard. No need to freak out, brewers have used wild yeasts in beer making for centuries. John has had the same old growth beard since 1978 and for over 15,000 brews, so it is no great surprise that a natural yeast ideal for brewing was discovered in his beard. What does beard beer taste like? try it, we think youíll be surprised...

Pours a cloudy gold with a moderate white head. Nose is very yeasty. Tastes like a Belgian - sweet but with a nice, slight bitterness. To me, this would be better on a warm day. Although I am not a huge fan of Belgian ales because I do not really like the yeast strains they use, this is a pretty good beer.

Bottle, shared with Parksy and Grippitis. Medium gold, white head. A bit farmy, rustic, yeasty, light pale malts, low hop presence. The more I drank this, the more it grew on me... wait, did I just make a pun about beard beer?

Crystal clear amber with a mud sized white fluffy head. A little Belgium on the nose, light esters, bubble gum and slightly tart. A little farmhouse-ish, a little tart, some Belgium ale characters of spice and esters. Light and refreshing. The finish is crisp and clean, spicy hops linger in the mouth. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Total Wine, McLean 650ml ($6): Pours golden with a white head. Aroma is funky, Bretty type yeast, with some light fruitiness. Taste is a slightly funky Belgian style ale. Slightly sweet, with a dry finish. Light dry hops. Quite sessionable. I do like the yeast even if it comes from a beard.

On tap at Rogue Brewers on the Bay, pours mostly clear golden with a small white head. Aroma smells Belgian-esque, with farmhouse notes, Belgian yeast, and a touch of the rye. Flavour is just like a Belgian tripel, with notes of Belgian yeast and dough. Pretty simple beer - not really getting anything that strikes me as "beard"-like. Decent, gimmicky beer.

Yeasty aroma. Some dirty dishwater smell as well. Nice off white head and some lacing. Not as fresh as other belgian ales, maybe due to lack of showering? Light on the palate, fizzy, crisp. Ok beer, great concept, give it a crack.

On tap at Rogue Bar SF. Poured a deep copper with a small off white head. Nose has tons of Belgium yeast, dough, toffee sweetness and burnt toast. Interesting yet appealing aroma. Taste is somewhat sweet wit the toffee doughy flavours coming through upfront. Very malt driven. Interesting concept behind the brewers beard yeast. Isn't as bad as I thought it would be. Pretty decent worth a shot. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Oh, yes: Iím excited. $6.99 for the 650mL bottle purchased from Top Shelf Brews yesterday evening. To oversized snifter, it pours a pale sky orange with a trim, depleting ghost white ringed head one fingernail in length. Aromas of seaweed, toasted coconut, clementine peels, and sweat. Tastes the same only the addition of Belgian yeast, aged hops, and Bible paper by mid-palate. Spice and a little tingling of warmth by swallow. [insert dumb joke here] I just drank beard yeast beer. Mark another adventure off my bucket list.

Surprisingly average in every way. I was expecting something more unique being a wild ale. Decent & certainly drinkable but nothing memorable.
