Beard beer is brewed with a yeast created from Brewmaster John Maier’s beard. No need to freak out, brewers have used wild yeasts in beer making for centuries. John has had the same old growth beard since 1978 and for over 15,000 brews, so it is no great surprise that a natural yeast ideal for brewing was discovered in his beard. What does beard beer taste like? try it, we think you’ll be surprised...

Hazy deep gold beer, tidy white head. Smooth palate with a trailing minerally crisp bite. Wheaty malt, light malt cream. Light dry citric orange and lemon. Semi dry finish. Comes over as an okay wheat beer.

11/23/13. 22oz bottle thanks to Brent! Estery aroma, plenty of banana and cream, hints of citrus. Banana flavor as well, estery, some hefe or Belgian aspects. Touches of citrus and biscuity malt. Meh.

Sort of boring Belgian style. I was hoping for something more fun. Gold pour. Nose of clove and bread yeast. Taste added some citrus and biscuit. Mouthfeel was lively. Meh.

Bomber. Poured clear, bright golden with a short-lived white head. The aroma picked up white pepper, cloves, and lemon zest over light bready malts and some darker sugars I couldn’t quite place.. didn’t seem all that cohesive. The flavor found lightly syrupy honey and bready malts at the core, with lemon zest, cloves, and a bit of pepper around.. a few too many residual sugars along with Belgian-y yeast notes on the finish (didn’t know John was Belgian). Lighter-bodied with high-ish carbonation on the palate.. a touch cloying at times, but otherwise it flowed smoothly.. creamy carbonation.. not bad.

650 ml bottle. Pours an orange/gold with light head. Aromas of oranges, resin, and a little brett. Flavor is light resin and malt; maybe a bit of spice. Nothing special other than the concept.

Purchased at Liquor Shed with some apprehension. A hazy medium gold/yellow colour, the foam does it’s thing with a good head and good lacing. The nose, to me, has a lot of citrus and clove, maybe not so much citrus, more of a coriander smell. I get some sweet that reminds me of candi sugar, a hint of something directing me towards the tart but maybe not. Okay, the taste doesn’t live up to the smell. Clove, some coriander, a hint or 2 of pepper, some sweetness that, how do I put this, comes from a low grade candi sugar, if that even exists. The smell was lively and vibrant, tasting leaves a bit to desired for my palate. This beer does pretty much nothing for my palate. Yeah, I glad I tried it and got this review in but this is definitely a one off.

Funky yeast nose, taste is belgium yeast with light malts and hops. Nothing sticks out but it is overall solid

Interesting concept getting wild yeast from a brewers beard what It produces is a slightly muddled Belgian style of beer it’s not bad by any stretch but it’s probably not something I would pick up again in a hurry having said that a little break from heavy hop flavoured beers once in a while can not hurt can it?

Bomber shared with Tristan. Cloudy orange with white, airy cap that sticks around decently. Aroma of cheese and straw. Taste is decently funky/cheesy, but then a caramel malt takes over and leaves the regular rogue thin mouthfeel.

Light orange/brown pour, very thick and cloudy, half an inch of white head. Belgian-y scent: spices like clove, nutmeg and anise, fresh cream and lemon. Lively carbonation, thin but creamy mouthfeel, clean finish. Flavor not too strong, kind of watery. Citrus zest, club soda, belgian yeast, black pepper and carmel malt. Really not bad but thin on flavor and depth.
