Beard beer is brewed with a yeast created from Brewmaster John Maier’s beard. No need to freak out, brewers have used wild yeasts in beer making for centuries. John has had the same old growth beard since 1978 and for over 15,000 brews, so it is no great surprise that a natural yeast ideal for brewing was discovered in his beard. What does beard beer taste like? try it, we think you’ll be surprised...

Draft from Prison Hill Brewing in Yuma. All the necessary stuff for this to qualify as a Belgian Ale. Just not enough of it to make it spectacular. Better than some of the stuff I had tonight.

Bottle. Birthday present - thanks Baz. Aromas of bananas, bubblegum, bread, nectarines and coriander. Smooth mouthfeel with fruity, tangy yeast dominating the flavour profile, along with sweet candy and spice. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Pours straw, malty straw aromas, flatish straw flavours, mildly sweet. Cool beard, boring beer.

Bottle. Hazy yellow orange, with a white head. Yeasty, fruity, biscuit, and malty. Not super interesting, but drinkable.

Poured from a tap. Hazy copper color, huge frothy white head. Medium clove aroma. Medium body, lacks complexity, distinct wheat and clove flavor with a clean finish. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Actually quite disappointed, while I appreciate the beard yeasts as a unique feature of this beer, it’s actually really, really plain, nothing amazing here. Won’t be buying again, cool thought though. But to me its a plain ale.

This beer was good it had a very predominant yeast flavor profile, it was much to be expected with this beer. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Bottle from Pacific Liquor: Poured a golden liquid and appeared with a ton of sediment floating about. Decent layer of foam head that quickly retreated. Nose is vibrant with a zesty smell of lemon zest or some other kind of citrus fruit zest while also having notes of spices from an upfront Belgian yeast. Flavor is tart with the taste of unripe fruit but lacks any chance of Belgian yeast flavors. Might have been several months in shelf age.

Bottle bbe Jan 2016. Colour gold, clear, very strong head. Aroma metallic, grainy. Taste sweet grains, fruity, light herbal bitterness. Finishes sweet. Mouthfeel thin. Belgian golden ale, perhaps? ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

650mL bottle from Dan Murphys BB 30/06/16 Orange gold body, white head holds. Moderate intensity aroma - grain malts, bready yeast, sorta spicy in a odd phenolic way. Medium bodied, drying texture, moderate carbonation. Grainy malts continue on the body, it’s somewhat bolstered by a bready, spicy, almost clove & pepper phenolic yeast spice. Bitterness reasonably low, as is hop character. Interesting experiment, end result is nothing special - was hoping for something more funky!
