Beard beer is brewed with a yeast created from Brewmaster John Maier’s beard. No need to freak out, brewers have used wild yeasts in beer making for centuries. John has had the same old growth beard since 1978 and for over 15,000 brews, so it is no great surprise that a natural yeast ideal for brewing was discovered in his beard. What does beard beer taste like? try it, we think you’ll be surprised...

(Rogue Beard Beer) Bottle 650 ml at home, poured into a tulip glass. ABV 5.7% according to the importer’s sticker on the bottle. Deep golden orange colour on the body, crystal clear, with a small and a bit thin head, off-white in colour, with okay retention. Light lacing around the glass. Aroma is fruity, with peaches and apricots, some sweet malts too, not different than other belgian ales. Taste is fruity too, the same peachy notes, apricots, wheat, an a nice refreshing sourness on the finish, nothing extreme but it’s there. Mildly bitter aftertaste with good duration. Medium thin body, lively carbonation. Quite dry palate. Good beer but other than the story behind it, nothing too special.

Very dense & fine, just yellowish head, quite stable over hazy golden beer with very lively carbonation. Sourish nose, wild yeast indeed. Esters, as pineapple or citrus, but also vegetables (celery, rhubarb,...) Toasted, sweetish, recooled ghee, with a bitterish vegetable streak. Much less citrus or other fruity notes in the flavour, but the acidity remains - lactic, maybe treshold acetic. Warming up, bitterish (root)spices. Titillating, spritzy MF; feels highly attenuated, rather light body hence. Beard or not, though this is not at all a bad sour, its complexity pales compared to the simplest unfiltered gueuze.

Brown orange transparent beer with a weak head. Citric yeasty smell, subtle hoppy sweetness. Nicely balanced between bitterness and sourness, subtly sweet citric. Dry astringent finish. Salty.

Słaby aromat, nieco owocowości i to tyle. Finisz słodko - kwaśny, długi i przyjemny. Udane piwo, z silniejszym aromatem byłoby dużo lepsze.

Visually, it looks like a standard pale ale. Hazy, tinge of orange, nice head. Aroma is fruity. Not a ton of presence from the hops or malt, which is expected. Back off on those to make the star of this beer, the yeast, shine through. And actually, it doesn’t taste as funky as expected. Slightly sour finish. You could easily pass this off as a Belgian Pale Ale. Maybe famous because of the novelty, but I think it’s pretty good.

Well, apparently his beard tastes like a hoppy belgian beer, with a slight fresh sourness.

Pours a hazy amber colour with a white head. Aroma is malt, fruit, yeast and citrus. Taste is yeasty leading to moderate hop finish. Not bad.

Bottle @tasting. Aroma is light fruits, some dusty malt, hint of malt. Flavour is dry and fruity, light malt note, slight hint of funk. Nice and clean but nothing.

Bottle from street market in Portland, thanks to Jules. Pours clear yellow/golden with a thin white head that fades extremely fast. Aroma is fruity, sugar and yeasty. Some citrus, but faint and some liquorice. Taste is bitter with some sweetness. Definitely tastes like a Belgian Ale but it’s a lot more watery. Weak bodied lets this down.
