COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Please note: Black Brutal is not the same beer as Black Brutal Bitter, which is an alias for Skullsplitter.

JLS Release #23: Black Brutal 2007 John Maier has brewed a dark verison of Brutal Bitter for a second time, with some degree of variation from the first Black Brutal recipe (aka, SkullSplitter). Black Brutal 2007 is mahogany in color with a smooth roasted malt flavor and agressive bitterness. Unfiltered ~ Unfined ~ Uncompromised... Prost! Black Brutal ’07 is brewed with Great Western 2-row and Munich; Weyermann Carafoam Special, Carawheat, and Melanoidin malts, along with Summit, Simcoe and Amarillo hops in the boil, and more Amarillo in the hopback; plus free range coastal waters, and top fermenting Pacman yeast. Black Brutal ’07 measures in at 15.1 Plato OG, 4.2 Plato FG, and approx 60 IBUs.

Draught > Flying Saucer. Ehh, not bad. This is pretty hoppy but not IPA hoppy. Reminds me of a ESB more than a schwarzbier. I wonder if the description above is correct?

Sample @ Papago Brewing, Scottsdale, AZ. Toffee and mild sweet roast aroma. Black body with tan head and decent lacing. Light roasted flavor along with somewhat sweet malt candy present. Body texture was thicker than others of this style and interesting sample.

Rated 7/27/07. Draft at Freakin Frog in Las Vegas, NV. Served in a snifter. Murky dark mahogany to black in color. Small tan head stuck around for the duration and left excellent, thick rings of foamy lacing all the way down the glass. Strong, bitter hoppy nose. I picked up piney, floral, and herbal hops, with a roasted malt and chocolate background. The flavor is wonderfully bitter, with the ample hops melding perfectly with a roastey, choclatey, coffee malt baseline. Medium body that went down like silk. Fantastic brew! Bottom line: This beer is grossly underrated....period.

Tap @ Bittercreek (a while ago). This was from about January that I had this pint. Poured a murky brown color with no head and very little lacing. The nose was spicy and full of sharp yeast, moderate roast and bright acidic nutty notes. Moderate yeastiness and hops in the flavor but it blended towards the light chocolate and coffee notes of the roasted malts. The finish was clean, but sharp. A bit offputting with the pacman yeast.

redlight (2317) - Orlando, Florida, USA - MAY 15, 2007
on draft @ redlight redlight. Piney, resin aroma, hints of roasted malts. Pours very dark brown, with reddish hints on the outside and a think tan head. Citrus hops up front with a sweet flavor, notes of tar, burnt coffee, crisp hoppy finish. This beer is very smooth on the palate. Easily enjoyable. (this is my 2nd year trying this beer, much better than last)

On tap at The Sanctuary in Iowa City. This poured with a near black body that had ruby coloring on the edges. The thick head was a light tan color. The aroma was hoppy with some grapefruit and pine resin. There was also some fresh cut hard wood. The taste was fairly bitter with grapefruit rind and a dry woody finish. There was also a note of almond shells. Body was medium thick and somewhat chewy. This was an unbalanced hop bomb. No thanks.

On tap, Cole’s, Buffalo. Milt hop, malt aroma. Neat murky dark brown, pretty fair sized dark white head. Huge bitter taste, very very dry. Slight hints of chocolate and burnt malt, but c’mon, this one is all about the hops, and they are aggressive. I liked it, but it is kind of joke calling it a Schwarzbier, isn’t it? Hop monster.

Draught at Cole’s, Buffalo, NY. Pours a very murky dark brown with a large lasting creamy tan head -- looks really nice! Based on the appearance of the beer and not knowing what it was called at the time, the aroma took me by surprise, I was not expecting all those hops! Aroma’s a little mild with lots of hops, some light malt and spices. Flavour’s oh so bitter! It starts malty, a bit roasty with hints of smoke and coffee but ends with an incredibly bitter finish. Medium bodied. Pretty good, I enjoyed it.

Draught. At Cole’s in Buffalo NY with blankboy, tupalev and rudolf. Poured very murky opaque deep brown with a large foamy tan head. Bitter aroma, but I seemed to detect more malt than the others - hint of root beer herbaceousess, burnt caramel malt, ultimately dominant dry bitter herbal hops in profusion. The taste - simply, like thicker, burnt Brutal Bitter - carbonized herbal bitterness in a long finish and aftertaste. Thick body, astringent, mild carbonation - some citrus notes in the bitter finish. Maltier than you’d think, but generic hop/bitter dominated - the carbonization would make this a good pairing with food, I wish I’d had it with, rather than before, my Kobe beef bleu cheese burger.
