Please note: Black Brutal is not the same beer as Black Brutal Bitter, which is an alias for Skullsplitter.

JLS Release #23: Black Brutal 2007 John Maier has brewed a dark verison of Brutal Bitter for a second time, with some degree of variation from the first Black Brutal recipe (aka, SkullSplitter). Black Brutal 2007 is mahogany in color with a smooth roasted malt flavor and agressive bitterness. Unfiltered ~ Unfined ~ Uncompromised... Prost! Black Brutal ’07 is brewed with Great Western 2-row and Munich; Weyermann Carafoam Special, Carawheat, and Melanoidin malts, along with Summit, Simcoe and Amarillo hops in the boil, and more Amarillo in the hopback; plus free range coastal waters, and top fermenting Pacman yeast. Black Brutal ’07 measures in at 15.1 Plato OG, 4.2 Plato FG, and approx 60 IBUs.

Draft at Barley’s, Knoxville. Well, I guess I like this stuff better than most, so far. Dark brown, verging on black, no head. Aroma is citrusy, with a hint of coffee, maybe rather stale coffee. Flavor is similiar to regular Brutal Bitter, with cheap coffee dumped in it, plus a touch of, well for lack of a better way to put it, funk. And not in a particularly good, Sly and the Family Stone way, either.

Rogue Black Brutal Bitter... This beer was available on draught at Barley’s Tap Room and Pizzeria in Knoxville, TN. Sean (illinismitty) purchased a pint to share with everybody at the Tennessee Spring(ish) Tasting on 3/10/2007... Rogue Black Brutal Bitter looks dark brown and was near opaque in the glass. It has a creamy, light tan head that left thick, dense lacing on the glass. The aroma is a nauseous mixture of ammonia, citrus, and grass. The flavor is extremely earthy and a blend of dirt, old grass, and some trailing citrus hops. There is an aggressively bitter and dry finish that wouldn’t be so bad if it weren’t for the horrific aroma and flavor. The beer is both brutal and bitter, but definitely not good or remotely enjoyable. Unfortunately it was the worst beer of the evening. Four of us weren’t even able to drink more than half the pint! Even though this was such an abrasive and disappointing brew, I really do appreciate Sean’s thoughtfulness and generosity (even though I really think that he was just trying to make us all sick!).

Draft at Barley’s in Knoxville, bought by illinismitty to share with us at the Tennessee Spring(ish) Tasting. Dark brown in the glass with a creamy off-white head that left light lacing. Awful aroma of ammonia (cat piss) and hops with a light chocolate background. The flavor was about the same. Medium body and mild bitterness throughout. This has got to be a bad batch.

On tap @ Pizza Plant Walker Center. Very dark, very bitter pretty disappointing. Decent malt flavor. Have not drank cat urine so I can’t go there

Sampled at the Knoxville tasting courtesy of Sean. Sean went to the bar and came back with some of this which was the locker stock series number whatever. This stuff is really dark, and has a big creamy head on it. The appearance is about the best thing this beer has to offer. After discussing at the table what the aroma was, the best we could come up with was cat urine and grass. The taste was off. Very bitter and unpleasant notes of grass and just funk. Not a good beer at all.

Draft at Barley’s in Knoxville, which I purchased for the tasting. I was pretty excited to try this. Pours black with a tan head and decent lacing. Carbonation is a tad aggressive. Aroma of cat wizz, caramel, and some orange. Flavor or medium dark roast and tea offset by some citrus hops. Finish has a rather unpleasant bitter tea like finish. This was not a very good beer, and a waste of $2.75.
