3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20
Draft at Barley’s, Knoxville. Well, I guess I like this stuff better than most, so far. Dark brown, verging on black, no head. Aroma is citrusy, with a hint of coffee, maybe rather stale coffee. Flavor is similiar to regular Brutal Bitter, with cheap coffee dumped in it, plus a touch of, well for lack of a better way to put it, funk. And not in a particularly good, Sly and the Family Stone way, either.

3 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20
On tap at Papago Brewing. Poured black with a dense, foamy head. Aroma of grass, a bit of citrus, and ammonia (though not to the point of calling it cat piss). Tasted very much like an IPA and was expecting something a lot maltier - instead I got a lot of hops and bitterness. This did not taste like a schwarzbier at all in my book. It was also rather astrigent, though I didn’t notice the funk or off-taste everyone else is talking about as I found it completely drinkable, though not remarkable in any way.

3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 12/20
On tap at Uber. Let’s just start off by saying that this is not a Schwarzbier. It may share some common characteristics with the style, but that’s as far as it goes. Pours clear blackish brown with a lightly lacy tan head. Aroma of oranges, chocolate and pine. Medium body and carbonation. Lightly astringent grapefruit and coffee finish. The flavors in this beer seem to fight with each other rather than being complimentary, and the result is a lack of balance. Not ’bad’, but just barely edging into ’good’ territory.

3 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 12/20
On tap at Mahars. Dissapointing for the style. Not nearly enough body and the flavor wasn’t very strong.

2.9 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 10/20
Draft at Barley’s in Knoxville, which I purchased for the tasting. I was pretty excited to try this. Pours black with a tan head and decent lacing. Carbonation is a tad aggressive. Aroma of cat wizz, caramel, and some orange. Flavor or medium dark roast and tea offset by some citrus hops. Finish has a rather unpleasant bitter tea like finish. This was not a very good beer, and a waste of $2.75.

Poured amber with a white head. Aroma of hops. Not much to smell. Damn did this thing finish bitter. Some hops, citrus, and fruit. Rather sweet, but finished bitter.

2.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 9/20
On tap at The Sanctuary in Iowa City. This poured with a near black body that had ruby coloring on the edges. The thick head was a light tan color. The aroma was hoppy with some grapefruit and pine resin. There was also some fresh cut hard wood. The taste was fairly bitter with grapefruit rind and a dry woody finish. There was also a note of almond shells. Body was medium thick and somewhat chewy. This was an unbalanced hop bomb. No thanks.

2.5 AROMA 3/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 9/20
As a dark beer drinker, I found this offering from Rogue awfully dissappointing. I mean, if you’re going to call your beer "Brutal Black," then at least bring it strong and stop trying to create an IPA that looks like a stout.
