3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 11/20 maniac (3474) - Baltimore, Maryland, USA - MAY 25, 2007
WBF-Raleigh. From John’s Locker Stock. Dark brown body with a large creamy light brown head. Heavy malt aroma. Caramel molassas and roasted malt flavor. Somewhat unbalanced with the heavy bitter malt.
2.6 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 4/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 10/20 ChainGangGuy (3682) - Canton, Georgia, USA - APR 4, 2007
Appearance: Dark, hazy brown body with a medium-sized, khaki-colored head.
Smell: The aroma smells mighty strongly of hops, with an assertive pine scent leading the pack. Far, far behing the hop scent is a roasty, chocolate malt character.
Taste: A slightly sweet, slightly bready flavor is almost immediately replaced by no real hop flavors, just a pure, raw bitterness that is quite unforgiving. Great, another resentfully hopped Rogue brew. Eventually, all the flavors become completly drowned out by the intense acrid bitterness that continues to build up in the back of the mouth as each sip becomes more toilsome to swallow than the last.
Mouthfeel: Medium-full body, with a slight chewiness. Carbonation remains low.
Drinkability: Enough bitterness to make finishing this pint a truly gruelling ordeal.

Dark brown with a white head. Bitter hoppy smells. Some dark sweet tastes and lots of piney bitter hops.

Draft (like everyone else) at Dilly Deli. Double Dark IPA as Peanut described it - I believe that fits well. A deeper, malty, less fruity aroma than a typical IPA. Dark amber color and fairly clear. Confusing beer to drink as the appearance makes you think dunkel or the like. But the flavor and mouthfeel is IPA with some slight variations. Dark than most American Strong Ales - a new category perhaps. My full rec.

On draft at the Dilly Deli.
Pours darker than any other IPA I’ve ever had. Has a nice quarter inch head on it when served. Smell is dark and a little roasty. You don’t really get the flavor in the nose. It’s all in the taste. And this is where the hops take over. Lots of bitter/astringent piney hops. Just enough to be assertive and not kill the drink.
It has a thicker mouthfeel for an IPA as well. This is a very good beer that I could easily drink a few of.
3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20 alexsdad06 (2230) - Ohio, USA - MAR 14, 2007
3/14/06 at Dilly Deli on tap. Dark mahogany color, clean and clear. Very thin head. Aroma of hops, citrus, and dark malts. Flavor much of the same: citrus, hops, a bit nutty though after reading the description, I expected more. This does have a bitter bite to it. Not bad. I might have rated this higher had I not had the special cask conditioned two hearted ale first.

Draft at Dilly Deli with Shigadeyo, on the third stop of our pub crawl. Pours dark brown with a thin head. Aroma of citrus hops and caramel. Flavor of piney and spicy hops with a nutty and caramel backbone. A moderate hop bite on the clean finish. Not a bad brew, and the description of Double Dark IPA fits well
