3.7 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20 JPDIPSO (4957) - Wauwatosa, Wisconsin, USA - SEP 13, 2008
Deep umber mahogany color with a moderate head that settle to a thin coating of taupe bubbles. Big hoppy aroma, with mild ruby red grapefruit, light pine and citrus. Underlying malt scents with pale malts, caramel, molasses and light fruit. A cross between an american strong and an english barley wine aroma. Sweet malts and somewhat grassy hops in the start. THe grassy hops continues throughout the quaff, with herbs. pine and citrus bitterness building into the finish and linger. Fairly sharp spicy finish and linger. Some nuttiness comes in the linger as well. No doubt this would last a number of years in the crock/bottle, but at the price, one and done is good for me. Fairly soft in feel, but the acidity in the finish thins it out.

Pours the color of a chocolate lab. Large tan head. You can smell the hops in the aroma and it sits on some nutty chocolate. Strong and chocolatey at the start with tons of piney bitterness at the finish. Nice.

UPDATED: OCT 27, 2010 Brewers ale from 2008. Re-rating after first sample was disappointing. Bomber ceramic bottle. Hazy reddish with dense tan head and strong malty hoppy aroma. Hits of bigger things to come. This is a hearty ale but still the flavors are not clean. Hops flavor is poor and does not play nice with what could be a nice winter warmer. Hmmm, sadly, I’m disappointed again. The aroma led me built expectations but the flavor is a downer. Too bad.

On tap on the hand pump at Rogue in San Fran. But I also have the ceramic bottle of this (with the dog tag) at home. Very good brew, and I shall look forward to drinking this again in my basement.

Pours dark brown to the point where light barely gets through. Not too strong of an aroma but good, with notes of malt and chocolate. The aroma carries over in the flavor with a strong malt precence backed by a pretty strong hop notes. The bitterness defintely hit you up front then diminshes in the aftertaste where a more malty choclatly taste comes forward. A very good, complex, refereshing beer. RIP Brewer!!!!!!

[08 bottle courtesy of FunkyBrewster] Pours a clear dark glowing mahogany with a very small fine off-white head. Really nice aroma, burnt caramel malt and molasses, some piney hops and feet? Very dark, earthy and bitter flavors, slightly piney. Sweetens up a bit as it goes. Really burnt. Average body, active carbonation, a bit sticky.
