dchmela (686), Orlando, Florida, USA Jul 11, 2008 On cask and dry hopped at the Blind Tiger. Pours dark brownish red with a fluffy off white head. Chocolate malt aroma with a little bitter hop in it. Surprised by the lack of hops in the aroma, I was blown away with the hops in the taste! Big malty body with spicy bitter hops, really nice. Finishes bitter and tasty, very much a Rogue beer.
Enniskillen (1542), Port Angeles, Washington, USA Aug 18, 2008 Growler from Peaks. Dark amber with a nice tan head. Aroma is fairly malty, with a light hoppiness to it also, caramel, and brown sugar. Taste is nice and hoppy with a light caramel tinge to it, long filling hoppiness with a sticky body. biznizness (687), Mooresville, North Carolina, USA Aug 17, 2008 On tap on the hand pump at Rogue in San Fran. But I also have the ceramic bottle of this (with the dog tag) at home. Very good brew, and I shall look forward to drinking this again in my basement. t4h2c0 (63), seattle, USA Aug 12, 2008 Pours dark brown to the point where light barely gets through. Not too strong of an aroma but good, with notes of malt and chocolate. The aroma carries over in the flavor with a strong malt precence backed by a pretty strong hop notes. The bitterness defintely hit you up front then diminshes in the aftertaste where a more malty choclatly taste comes forward. A very good, complex, refereshing beer. RIP Brewer!!!!!! 17thfloor (636), Chicago, Illinois, USA Aug 8, 2008 [08 bottle courtesy of FunkyBrewster] Pours a clear dark glowing mahogany with a very small fine off-white head. Really nice aroma, burnt caramel malt and molasses, some piney hops and feet? Very dark, earthy and bitter flavors, slightly piney. Sweetens up a bit as it goes. Really burnt. Average body, active carbonation, a bit sticky.
FunkyBrewster (114), Chicago, Illinois, USA Aug 8, 2008 Pours a dark reddish brown brown with a small off-white head that lingers as a froth. Aroma is dark fruits and a bit nutty. Very pungent hops balance the mild roasted malt sweetness that peaks through. Flavor starts out very bitter with some strong hop that tingle on the front of the tongue. A very pleasant malty appears with a candy like sweetness that is quickly overcome with a returning bitterness that holds in the back of the mouth. While there is an obviously huge hop character I was surprised by the sugary character in the middle. Good beer, perhaps a little overwhelmingly bitter for some, but still pleasurable.
