COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Brutal combines Oregon hops with English Malts. The Oregon grown Crystal hop is a triploid variety developed from the German Hallertau aroma hop variety with contributions from Cascade, Brewers Gold, and Early Green. Crystal is the only hop used in brewing Brutal and it provides a massive amount of aroma without dry-hopping. The English malts used are floor malted Pipkin (a mellow cross of Maris Otter and Warboys, from an English company called Beeston), Cara Vienna and Cara Wheat.

Bronze, hazy with a clinging, lasting white foam head. Emphasize "brutal" here--more hops than any bitter I've ever had, I think, asting astringency and grapefruit. Forget the commercial label, this is in APA/IPA territory to me. (on tap at Rogue Ales Public House, Portland)

Bomber. Earth, caramel, and dull hops in the nose. Murky copper golden body with a soapy off-tan head - reminds of apple cider. Bitter taste, drenched in hops, with slight malic swaths and spritzy wooden citrus. A very earthy, almost dirty tone, thick maltiness. Piney caramel is really nice, seems a bit brighter. Medium body (actually, consistency is a little like unfiltered cider as well) dries out toward the end, where it picks up some nice bready notes. Maris Otter is nice here, but clashes a bit with the Cascades. A good bitter with some balance and character. If the alcohol were a bit lower, I’d have this in droves in the summer months.

Initial odor of the head reminded me of cat urine. Had a good head, slight fizzy. Highly hopped with bitter finish (hints of flowers/fruit in there too). Slightly cloudy with golden amber color. Not one of the better Rogues.

22oz bottle. Pours a hazy, orangish-amber color; textured, off-white head with excellent retention and lacing. Light, hoppy aroma, showing citrus and oranges; some biscuity malts as well. Medium mouthfeel: lively citrus and bitter hops with something of an English character (but tempered bitterness); relaxed carbonation, with a solid biscuity / toasted malt core; dense and well-balanced; very drinkable. Medium, biscuity and bready malt finish; slightly dry.

22oz bottle sampled at the Rogue tasting at Blacklick Wine & Spirits. Color is copper/amber with a big off-white head. Aroma is overtly grapefruit/hop, with a touch of malty sweetness. Flavor is super hoppy with a nice malt balance on the back end. Tasty stuff!

Pours to a hazy coppery body with a huge lasting fluffy white head. The aroma is very large. Bright citrus hops, grapefruit, chocolate chip cookie dough. The flavor, albiet good, is lacking something. It has nice bitter citrus and grass. Light cookie-ish malts. The palate is medium bodied, bitter, not lingering.

UPDATED: JUN 14, 2008 Bottle from Binny’s (Orland Park, IL). 12 oz. bottle poured into a conical pint glass. Pours a slightly hazy amber. Nice medium head that manages to stick around minimally after pour. Smells of hops, caramel malts, and some fruit action. Taste is a nice balanced hoppy attack that fades into a smoothness that tastes rather malty. Finish is rather bitter and sharp, but enjoyable in my book. Nice memorable aftertaste that I enjoy. A beer I have enjoyed many times before, but never rated. A top tier ESB.

Pours slightly hazed gold into a shaker. Bright white head with little retention recedes leaving sheet lacing to hug rim. Pine and grapefruit aromas. Immediate upfront pine turning to sweet caramel and back to a dry grapefruit finish.
Earlier Rating: 3/27/2006 Total Score: 3.8
Pours a hazy orange/gold into a shaker. Pine notes. Excellent head retention. Very well balanced upfront with slightly creamy malt which quickly changes to a lingering flat citrus bitter finish.
