COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Brutal combines Oregon hops with English Malts. The Oregon grown Crystal hop is a triploid variety developed from the German Hallertau aroma hop variety with contributions from Cascade, Brewers Gold, and Early Green. Crystal is the only hop used in brewing Brutal and it provides a massive amount of aroma without dry-hopping. The English malts used are floor malted Pipkin (a mellow cross of Maris Otter and Warboys, from an English company called Beeston), Cara Vienna and Cara Wheat.

A little hazy dark golden colored beer, with a thick fast off white head. The aroma is hoppy bitter, with fruits like grapes. The taste is sparkling, with bitters and fruits, grapes with some orange. A little spices in the back. The aftertaste is bitter in a pleasant way with some notes of sweet.

Frisco Grille (Rogue Wave Weekend) - Dark gold, creamy white head. Intense hoppy nose of florals, grapefruit rind, and lemon zest. Flavor is more of the same with a very bitter bite up front, and a very soft sweet malt backbone aiming for balance. Doesn’t ever come close, but it’s not supposed to with a name like this. Medium bodied, pillow soft carbonation, very dry, bittersweet finish. If you want to get your "bitter on"...

bottle. hazy orange-copper body with a fluffy white head. floral resiny hop aroma - citrus orange and grapefruit, along with some yeast. full body. sweet start and almost overwhelmingly hoppy. there is some effort to balance this beast but it falls a bit short. Sharp pine bitterness in the long, lingering finish. This is certainly an American rendition of the style.

Is there such a thing as a surprise beer from Rogue? I expected an English Bitter from the name but had no idea of the citric bitter hop fest that would follow. An excellent version of an IPA that adds a great malty deepness of body.

Dorwart (2111) - Robbinsville, New Jersey, USA - DEC 8, 2004
UPDATED: DEC 9, 2004 Large, light tan/yellow head of fine bubbles. Decent carbonation. Nice hoppy citrus aroma with some grapefruit and pine. Hazy dark orange/amber in color. Nice smooth flavor. Very well balanced with a bit of lemon. Crisp flavor. Dry palate with nice lingering bitterness at the finish. A very good ESB from a brewer with a lot of good beers. Nothing fancy just a very good beer.
