COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Brutal combines Oregon hops with English Malts. The Oregon grown Crystal hop is a triploid variety developed from the German Hallertau aroma hop variety with contributions from Cascade, Brewers Gold, and Early Green. Crystal is the only hop used in brewing Brutal and it provides a massive amount of aroma without dry-hopping. The English malts used are floor malted Pipkin (a mellow cross of Maris Otter and Warboys, from an English company called Beeston), Cara Vienna and Cara Wheat.

Light hazy orange beer with a dense off white head. Malty, caramel sweet aroma with a hoppy pineapple fruityness. Hoppy and bitter flavor with a light fruityness and some vague caramel sweet notes. Dry bitter finish.

Cloudy amber beer with a thick white head. Soft palate, a little frothy in the mouth. Mild hops from the mid to the soft and slightly dry finish. Really not Brutal after all!

UPDATED: MAR 18, 2008 Bottle 650 ml (listed as 6 % , 15 P)
Appearance: (3.5/5) Pours as murky amber with hint of bright copper, medium light creamy/rocky head.
Nose : (7/10) Fresh scent of crystal hops with sweet , juicy caramel going trough.
Flavor/Palate : Medium bodied ale , continuation of what aroma presented. Sweet caramel malt as main centre with bitter wet leaf hop side. Slightly chewy texture. Beyond light long lasting bitterness not much is carried at finish. Decent yet still I could not escape feeling of having simple two-dimensional ale. (F-6.9/10)(P-2.8/5)

Head is initially average sized, frothy, off-white, mostly diminishing. Body is hazy medium amber, dense tiny particles, bottle conditioned. Aroma is lightly malty (cookie), lightly hoppy (flowers, grapefruit), trace yeast (video game), with light notes of orange and apricot. Flavor is moderately sweet, moderately bitter, lightly acidic. Finish is lightly sweet, heavily bitter, lightly acidic. Medium body, watery texture, lively carbonation, lightly astringent. Two surprises: very weak aroma at any temperature (bad), less citric bite/astringency than expected (good). This malt may be derived from Maris Otter, but it's no match.

Orange coloured. Notes of apricots, pineapples and honey. Very bitter and hoppy. Complex. A great brew.

This is one of my favorites from Rogue. Really nice copper color with so much hops it is unreal. Lots of bitterness, flavor and aroma, which is very surprising considering they only used crystal. Malt is not really in balance but who cares. This beer rules!

Pours a thick cloudy orange. Cascades of orange citrus, with a touch of malt buried beneath. Dry flavors in front with mild orange citrus with a grapefruit bite. Smallish cream colored head stick to the glass. Bitterness sets on the back of the tongue as the hops resins congregate and and sit and chat about things. After a few minutes the malt takes back the scene and pleads to send some more bitter refreshments. Gains a bit more balance as it warms. Nice IPA.

Bottle: Hazy orangy yellow hue with lasting off-white frothy head and very good lace. The aroma has notes of aromatic and piney hops, grapefruit and apple, dusty and earthy malt and yeast combination, and a touch of honeycomb. The taste starts with a kick of bitters but is followed nicely by a layer of malt. Much more balanced that I expected. The finish is a chalky bitter aftertaste. The feel is surprisingly full and biting, not aggressive however. Except for the piney nature, this brew is very much within the style of the traditional ESB’s. Shocked, but I really liked this brew. Brutal my arse.
