COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Brutal combines Oregon hops with English Malts. The Oregon grown Crystal hop is a triploid variety developed from the German Hallertau aroma hop variety with contributions from Cascade, Brewers Gold, and Early Green. Crystal is the only hop used in brewing Brutal and it provides a massive amount of aroma without dry-hopping. The English malts used are floor malted Pipkin (a mellow cross of Maris Otter and Warboys, from an English company called Beeston), Cara Vienna and Cara Wheat.

650 mL bottle, cellar temp. Pours deep copper with huge foamy off-white head, slighlty hazy with some particles floating around, i forgot about the sediment while pouring.. oh well..no biggie. Piney hops, some orange zest and caramelly malt aroma. Hop dominant flavor with a bitter grapefruit-like finish. Slightly toasty caramel undertones. Great beer, but tasting blind, I’d probably say it was an IPA, as was mentioned before.

UPDATED: JAN 6, 2004 12/21/02: 22oz bottle: Cloudy orange color, with a huge long-lasting lace-producing rocky head. Nice hoppy aroma, light bitter taste. Full bodied. Old Rating: Hmmm...brutal and bitter.

UPDATED: JUL 10, 2006 Rerated July 10, 2006. I really like this stuff. No, it’s not too awfully bitter as the name might imply, but it is delicious and well-rounded. Full and smooth with just a nice kick of crystal hop at the end. How did I not enjoy it this much the first time around?

Pours a nice orange color, that gets quite hazy when the sediment is added. A nice persistant head on top. The aroma is the typical westcoast piney hop aroma. The flavors are quite a bit better. Much more malt than anticipated. Well done. A very nice session beer.

22 oz bottle pours a cloudy golden orange with a huge foamy off white head that leaves a sticky lacing in my glass. A good dose of citrus in the aroma, fruity grapefruit, pear, pineapple and caramel flavors, medium to full bodied with a soft and creamy mouthfeel, finishes with a lingering bitterness.

The boastful head slowly melted away to reveal a golden amber hue. The aroma teases you like a reluctant stripper, giving you hints of what is to come and inviting you to give it a try. Smooth taste greets the mouth, soon the tastes of fruit leave you looking for Lifesavers in the bottom of the glass. Bitter, yes. Brutal? A better word is beautiful.

22oz Bottle: Poured orange with a thick white head. Hop filled aroma. Equally hop filled taste. This is a keeper. Not to be confused with English bitters, this is more of an IPA. Could use a little more malt but I like it just the way it is.

Kind of a floral and hop aroma and an amber-orange hue. There was a grapefruit/lemon citrus taste secondary to the huge bitterness of the hops. This tasted like it has more hops than any IPA I’ve had. Finishes anything but smooth, but that’s ok. Only thing is that it left remnants of bitterness on my taste buds for a long time. Went really well with brie cheese and crackers.
