Brutal combines Oregon hops with English Malts. The Oregon grown Crystal hop is a triploid variety developed from the German Hallertau aroma hop variety with contributions from Cascade, Brewers Gold, and Early Green. Crystal is the only hop used in brewing Brutal and it provides a massive amount of aroma without dry-hopping. The English malts used are floor malted Pipkin (a mellow cross of Maris Otter and Warboys, from an English company called Beeston), Cara Vienna and Cara Wheat.

HopsandBolts (153) - Ontario, CANADA - FEB 6, 2015
650 ml bottle from the LCBO.

Appearance: Pours a hazy light copper with a finger of white head. Average retention and a fair bit of lacing.

Aroma: Apricots galore, plums, dried fruit, raisins.

Flavours: Orange peel, mango, marmalade.

Mouthfeel: Thin with moderate carbonation.

Overall: Wow, the aromas on this are ones you could just sniff by the hour. Strong apricot with dried fruit. The flavours aren’t quite as spectacular but this is still a very good IPA overall.

UPDATED: FEB 2, 2015 Subtle aroma. Slightly hazy appearance. Taste grapefruit and delightful strength. Again subtle strength and hit on the palate. One that could slip up on you very easily. Good.

The aroma is soft & subtle. Scents of fruit salad & fresh greens. The beer is golden & opaque, not cloudy but opaque. The flavour starts with a resounding taste of grapefruit. The bitterness & sourness of the grapefruit is balanced with a nice sweetness and herbal finish. The mouthful is silky.

Medium aroma with apricot, some citrus and hops. Golden orange color with lightly hazy liquid. Small white head. Strong but smooth taste with natural apricot, honey and hops. Medium aftertaste. Medium body with average/soft carbonation. Overall very soft and tasty IPA with some own character.

2014 bottle. Pours a bright orange copper with an off-white head. Aroma is biscuit and grapefruit with a slight brininess. Taste is the same with more of a sweet malt flavor with a little caramel and an earthy pine bitterness that's floral at the end. A little aspirin like. A nice medium mouthfeel that is more tannic than dry. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

BlackHaddock (4552) - Shropshire, ENGLAND - JAN 13, 2015
Half-pint on tap in Chez Sophie, Shrewsbury on 12th Jan 15 before the monthly bottle exchange. a little murky light amber/bronze in colour. Thin white head that tried to last. The nose was semi-sweet, biscuity malts, with a fruity hop undertone. The taste was hops to the fore with the maltiness in the aroma now taking second place in the flavouring. Nothing brutal about it: nice blend and a fine beer. Good bittering finish.

Deep hazy dark orange color with small head. Aroma of hops, but not too dominant, a bit citrus, a bit pine, also caramel. Smells like Zopf or Brioche. Taste is caramel, but not sweet, hoppy bitterness is very present, but not really fruity. Decent bitter finish. Smooth carbonation. Tasty, but not too complex. A non-sweet but still rather malty interpretation of the IPA style.
