Brutal combines Oregon hops with English Malts. The Oregon grown Crystal hop is a triploid variety developed from the German Hallertau aroma hop variety with contributions from Cascade, Brewers Gold, and Early Green. Crystal is the only hop used in brewing Brutal and it provides a massive amount of aroma without dry-hopping. The English malts used are floor malted Pipkin (a mellow cross of Maris Otter and Warboys, from an English company called Beeston), Cara Vienna and Cara Wheat.

UPDATED: FEB 1, 2011 Medium offwhite head. Hazy orange body. Firm sweet malty aroma with resiny hop background and toffee notes. Dry-sweet deep malty taste with a powerful resiny citric hop complement. Balanced and powerful. Dry dandelion pine needle and resin hop aftertaste with lemony notes. Very nice and highly drinkable. (0.355l bottle, Beer Palace, Oslo. Tasted like it was a bit old. Should rerate. Rated again Xmas 2010, with same score.)

355 ml bottle. Pours a hazy orange-tan with a thin but lasting white head. Aromas of pine, biscuits, caramel and grapefruit. Taste starts off with some malty sweetness before a firm pine resin and citrus bitterness washes through. Some lemon, pepper, mint and caramel at the end. Enjoyed this one.

Dense, irregular yellowish cream head over well-carbonated, fully hazy orange beer: shards of lace; Sweet, cake & rosewater, orangepeel. One can guess the hospe, but this is not a hoppy nose. Let alone brutal... Oranges, orangepeel, dry hops (especially retronasal). Bit grassy, too. Nice, suggested sweetness from the nose is held quite in check. Medium bodied, quite slick, well-carbonated. Nose misleads - the rest is more than decent.

A bit on the dryer side. Lots of piney hops. Medium bodied beer, very good. Try it if you are standing and the beer store getting nervous about what you should try. Just try it, you won’t be disappointed.

Bottiglia @ Milano Beer Week.

Draught at Delirium Hoppy Loft. Very thickly lacing, towering, frothy and dense, egg-white head, cloudy amberish orange blonde robe. Strong bouquet of orange peel, caramel candy, kiwi, pineapple, pink grapefruit, wet paper, toasted pine nuts, chicken broth, bitter honey - complex, perfumey and sweet, a bit unusual for the style. Soft tropical fruitiness in the onset, peach, kiwi, strawberry sweetness, orange, medium carbo with a smooth, slick caramelly maltiness, aromatically hoppy finish, spicy, blood orange ’citrusness’, bit peppery but in all soft and much more aromatic than deeply bittering, letting a lot of juicy maltiness pass. Soft, rounded, ’tropical’ IPA, very interesting.
