Brutal combines Oregon hops with English Malts. The Oregon grown Crystal hop is a triploid variety developed from the German Hallertau aroma hop variety with contributions from Cascade, Brewers Gold, and Early Green. Crystal is the only hop used in brewing Brutal and it provides a massive amount of aroma without dry-hopping. The English malts used are floor malted Pipkin (a mellow cross of Maris Otter and Warboys, from an English company called Beeston), Cara Vienna and Cara Wheat.

Into a tall glass. Three fingers of head, dark straw, little hazy body. A spruce and citrus smell. Nice and strong. Starts with solid maltiness, moves towards a stronger bitterness. Pine and lemon shine through. Great complexity and balance. Medium body and moderate carbonation. A medium bitter finish. An excellent IPA, canít go wrong with this one.

Taster at AEON Liquor. Mostly rich orange and caramel, herbal notes, a bit boozy, bitter finish. Fairly hoppy and drinkable, decent stuff.

Bottle at The Roebuck, Leek (Titanic) A hazy pale amber with a fizzy white head. Aroma is quiet sweet of wheat, caramel, some straw, orange marmalade, grapefruit, maybe honey and floral hops. Taste of orange marmalade, grapefruit, caramel, some wheat, a little honey, pine and slight floral hops. Medium bodied and moderate carbonation. A bittersweet, caramelly, citrus hop bitterness in the finish. Itís not brutal but itís pleasant and really well balanced. Isnít different but a good IPA

Bottle from Omihachiman Aeon. Really cloudy gold-copper, small head. Orange and caramel aroma. Tastes initially sweet from the caramel malt but the orangey hops give it a great bitter finish.

On tap at Beer Revolution. Pours a hazy amber colour with a tiny off white cap. Aroma is slightly grapefruity with a touch of B.O. Taste is slightly grapefruity with a bitterness at the end that reminds me of bile. Iíve had better IPAís.

On-tap, this pours a hazy copper color with a slight head. The aroma is full of bitter hops. The taste is bitter, well-balanced with lots of great hops flavor.

Bottle from Mitsuyaís. Pours a clear orange-amber with a modest off-white head. Big orange marmalade aromas with some grapefruit and pine notes as well. Taste is more of the same with the orange really standing out. Good caramel sweetness present as well. Awesomely balanced but pretty straight forward IPA. Nice medium to light bitter finish.

12oz bottle. Pours a orange amber with a medium white head with some lacing. Aroma is of citrus pine hops notes caramel malt and yeast. Taste has citrus and pine hops bitterness, some mild orange notes, caramel malt and yeast, which intensifies as the beer warms up. Palate is a medium body with good carbonation. Finish is sweet caramel malt, yeast with a good amount of citrus hops bitterness, a mildly dry ending. Not too brutal as the name implies. Overall a very good, solid and tasty brew.
