COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Brutal combines Oregon hops with English Malts. The Oregon grown Crystal hop is a triploid variety developed from the German Hallertau aroma hop variety with contributions from Cascade, Brewers Gold, and Early Green. Crystal is the only hop used in brewing Brutal and it provides a massive amount of aroma without dry-hopping. The English malts used are floor malted Pipkin (a mellow cross of Maris Otter and Warboys, from an English company called Beeston), Cara Vienna and Cara Wheat.

Bottle from the LCBO. Hopefully I can pick a few more of these up. Along with Central City’s Red Racer (British Columbia), Southern Tier’s 2XIPA, and Bellwood’s Witchshark DIPA, this has to be one of my favourite IPAs (OK, two of those were imperial IPAs but whatever). Great deep orange colour, not much in terms of head and it dissipates quickly. Aroma is sweet and floral hops. Flavour follows suit, though the hops are a little bit more mellow than the aroma might suggest. Still, this features lots of flavour from the hops, with some lighter fruits underneath: peaches, apricots, citrus fruits. Overall a really great beer.

0.65 l bottle from P&M Getränke (6.2% abv). Hazy, reddish amber with a thin, soapy, slowly diminishing, white head. Fruity-resiny aroma of orange, honey, tangerine, pine and hints of grapefruit. Fruity-resiny taste of orange, honey, tangerine, pine and hints of grapefruit. Short, slightly bitter finish. Medium body, slightly oily mouthfeel, average carbonation. Not as brutal as expected, rather mild for an IPA. Still quite good but too malt-accented in my opinion.

Perfect amber pour w/ a retaining tan head that leaves a great ring of lacing. The aroma is a mild blend of hop & malt. The taste has some underlying bitterness but is nicely balanced w/ malt which makes this quite drinkable! The soft mouthfeel is rather unusual for the style but makes this one unique & overall an excellent ipa!

Wittales (715) - Las Vegas, Nevada, USA - JUL 14, 2015
Appearance was hazy orangish gold with creamy off white diminishing 1 finger head, spotty lacing. Aromas are bright tangerine, lemon, grapefruit with soft dill and toasty malt sweetness. Taste are tangerine, lemon, grapefruit upfront gives way to soft malt sweetness. The clean yeast profile lets the lemon hop finish. Palate was smooth soft CO2 with medium body, then lasting clean crispy bitter finish. Overall a solid clean IPA with some classic hops.

kramer (5360) - Sunbury, Pennsylvania, USA - JUL 10, 2015
Bottle. Slightly hazy orangish copper body under a one finger foamy off-white head that left some sticky lacing. The nose is pretty even between the citrusy hops and the slightly sweet and toasty malt base. The flavor is a little on the sweeter side for me, which isn’t optimal for the style in my opinion. The sweetness dulls the hops pretty well, and there’s the typical Rogue ’house’ character on the back end. Medium bodied and slightly clingy with fizzy carbonation. Not a favorite, even among Rogue beers.
