Brutal combines Oregon hops with English Malts. The Oregon grown Crystal hop is a triploid variety developed from the German Hallertau aroma hop variety with contributions from Cascade, Brewers Gold, and Early Green. Crystal is the only hop used in brewing Brutal and it provides a massive amount of aroma without dry-hopping. The English malts used are floor malted Pipkin (a mellow cross of Maris Otter and Warboys, from an English company called Beeston), Cara Vienna and Cara Wheat.

I have just finished writing a lament in my last review about an attempt by a mainstream brewer to enter the craft market with the common denominator ethos regarding flavour. It just doesnít work. As a panacea to my malaise, I reached for two of the hoppiest things I could find. This being one: A lovely rosy gold colour with a determined white fluffy head that left good lace around the glass. Aromas of Seville orange marmalade, tangerine, orange blossom and pine amber. Smells good enough to eat, or at the very least, smear on your toast. Good carbonation and then the beginnings, middle and more middle of hoppy bitterness. Again it is an expression of the citrussy arts with a few cameos of apricot flesh. The bitterness was actually fairly soft on the palate leaving me wondering why it is called Brutal at all? It isnít. It is like a gorgeous long-limbed strawberry-blonde beauty cavorting in a field in a long summery dress picking flowers and chasing butterflies. Brutal it is not. Tasty it is.

Dense, irregular yellowish cream head over well-carbonated, fully hazy orange beer: shards of lace; Sweet, cake & rosewater, orangepeel. One can guess the hospe, but this is not a hoppy nose. Let alone brutal... Oranges, orangepeel, dry hops (especially retronasal). Bit grassy, too. Nice, suggested sweetness from the nose is held quite in check. Medium bodied, quite slick, well-carbonated. Nose misleads - the rest is more than decent.

A bit on the dryer side. Lots of piney hops. Medium bodied beer, very good. Try it if you are standing and the beer store getting nervous about what you should try. Just try it, you wonít be disappointed.

Bottiglia @ Milano Beer Week.

Draught at Delirium Hoppy Loft. Very thickly lacing, towering, frothy and dense, egg-white head, cloudy amberish orange blonde robe. Strong bouquet of orange peel, caramel candy, kiwi, pineapple, pink grapefruit, wet paper, toasted pine nuts, chicken broth, bitter honey - complex, perfumey and sweet, a bit unusual for the style. Soft tropical fruitiness in the onset, peach, kiwi, strawberry sweetness, orange, medium carbo with a smooth, slick caramelly maltiness, aromatically hoppy finish, spicy, blood orange ícitrusnessí, bit peppery but in all soft and much more aromatic than deeply bittering, letting a lot of juicy maltiness pass. Soft, rounded, ítropicalí IPA, very interesting.

20-09-2015, Scheveningen. Wat een lekker IPA! Zeker een aanrader. Mooie oranje kleur met een zoete geur. Perfect qua smaak en bitterheid. Prikkelt lekker op de tong!
