TASTING NOTES: A non-traditional India Pale Ale with big citrusy, hop flavor and intense hop aroma. Medium-bodied with a vibrant lingering hop-bitterness that is anything but brutal. Enjoy!

I have just finished writing a lament in my last review about an attempt by a mainstream brewer to enter the craft market with the common denominator ethos regarding flavour. It just doesn’t work. As a panacea to my malaise, I reached for two of the hoppiest things I could find. This being one: A lovely rosy gold colour with a determined white fluffy head that left good lace around the glass. Aromas of Seville orange marmalade, tangerine, orange blossom and pine amber. Smells good enough to eat, or at the very least, smear on your toast. Good carbonation and then the beginnings, middle and more middle of hoppy bitterness. Again it is an expression of the citrussy arts with a few cameos of apricot flesh. The bitterness was actually fairly soft on the palate leaving me wondering why it is called Brutal at all? It isn’t. It is like a gorgeous long-limbed strawberry-blonde beauty cavorting in a field in a long summery dress picking flowers and chasing butterflies. Brutal it is not. Tasty it is.

650ml bottle into shaker. As ’Portland State IPA’. Smoky malt nose, hoppy background. Translucent orange colour appearance with creamy white head with good lacing. Steady and fine carbonation. Slight zing, oily texture. Gorgeous hops complemented by creamy malt background. Finish is short and subtly fruity. Really easy drinking for 6.3%! Nice.

It is a nice troubled copper I.P.A There is of course the side bitter. The hop is here, there is a side sweet, a perfect wedding between the cereal and the hop and dry. Drinking this beer in a train from Geneva to Delemont.

Not bad at all. Mild IPA with moderate hops bite upfront giving away to smooth palate. Poured from a bomber to a glass. Good all day IPA

Drank with Rik 21-11 in Malden while playing Machiavelli. Fine beer, a bit peculiar hop taste. Not very exquisite but okay.

Pours a hazy gold/light orange with virtually no lace and moderate carbonation. Aroma of citrus hops and malt. Taste is malty, citrusy, and not as bitter as expected.

Pours a cloudy golden brown on tap with thin wispy white head that leaves light lace. Aroma is nice citrus hops, but kind of muted, taste follows, a bit oxidized. Think this keg may be old, but I can tell it’s former glory.

Received from beerhawk and very happy with this IPA. Hoppy but not too much, and quite refreshing.

UPDATED: NOV 18, 2015 12 oz brown bottle into a snifter glass. It poured a hazy orange amber colour with beige foam, short-lived but with lasting lace. Great hoppy aromas and flavours of sweet citrus, melon, pineapple, dank resin. Struck me as a blend of Columbus and Crystal, with some Southern Hemisphere tropical notes mixed-in. Intense, but not harsh. Definite bitterness, but not overwhelming. It seems I love these Rogue Alluvial hops. Hefty caramel maltbill underneath, but not so complex as to compete with this hops-forward balance. Light-medium body, moderate carbonation, lingering hoppy aftertastes. Extremely tasty.

Pours copper with a huge foamy head. Actually the aroma is something new for me, it smells like a combination of orange juice and pineapple juice, very nice indeed. A bit thin, some fruity pineapple notes and a slight bitter finish but too watery. Certainly not brutal.
