Bottle... Hazy burnt orange ale with a mid-sized, creamy, off-white head. Excellent retention. The Fruity, malty, earthy nose is of caramel and pine with a slap of grapefruit and undertones of tropical and fuzzy fruits. Medium to full-bodied with dancing carbonation. Moderate to medium grapefruit rind bitterness alongside unassuming caramel sweetness and a rumor of acidity. Lengthy, medium bitter finish.

Pours a dark amber. Aroma of sweet, slightly aged, hops and caramel malts. Flavors are a good balance of caramel malts, citrus and piney hops and some yeast. Not a bad brew at all.

From the bomber pours a dark, hazy, deep garnet colored body with a thick, creamy head of beige foam. The froth shows great retention, and leaves dense swaths of sticky sheet lacing to coat most of the glass. Sharp, resinous pine is first to greet the nose, followed by bitter grapefruit and floral hops, while toasted biscuit and caramel malt balanced things out. Flavors are set up similarly, striking grapefruit and pine resin bitterness holding steadfast amidst toasty crystal malts, burnt biscuit, and hints of bready yeast. Medium-plus in stature, with balanced carbonation and a slightly sticky mid point, the palate’s signature is it’s lingering, slightly astringent bitterness. Overall, this is quite the tasty amber ale, packed with hops yet well enough balanced.

Sampled at DLD ’09. Pours cloudy amber with a medium tan head. Caramelly malt aroma with a citrusy and piney hop influence. Can definitely smell the cascades. Malty flavor up front with a bitter cascade finish.

HOPSHUNTER (742) - Tampa, Florida, USA - MAY 23, 2009
Bottle, labled Captain Sig’s Northwestern Ale. Poured a dark amber with a tall eggshell head. Aroma is primarily hops then some caramel malt and a slight floral note as it warms. Taste is sweet caramel malt with a healthy dose of hops bitterness, slightly nutty and grassy. Feels somewhat thin in the mouth but very drinkable.

One of the last beers I tried at beerfest. I don’t remember much. It said Northwestern Ale on the label.

This one is on the darker end of the reddish orange spectrum. Aroma is dominated by piney hops and chocolate malt. Very bitter tasting and rather thin with a touch of sweetness at the finish. Decent but not something I really want to drink again.

Hazy reddish/orange with thin head. Malty nose. Flavor was unexpectedly hoppy with little malt profile (light over the back of the tongue). Nothing outstanding.

hazy amber with thick dense white head. Big floral hop aroma. Creamy palate. More hop bitterness than malt. A nice IPA from the Eugene Rogue brewery.

murkey light brown from the yeast, looks like maritime fare. a bit of chemical/floral warm fermented lager nose. same in taste, with some nutty, faint dark chocolate, a bit of piney hop. palate was smooth enough, with bitterness cutting that pillowy, effervescent Rogue finish. Did not care too much for it, the yeast contribution and lack of hoppiness was dissapointing.

Amber red pour with off white, light head. Subdued fruity hop aroma. Flavor is malty, chocolatey, with some hops in the back. Pretty mild, nice amber.
