3.6 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20 hero12 (179) - Minnesota, USA - JUL 25, 2012Big fluffy white head that lasts throughout. Pine and orange aroma, taste is similar with hints of caramel and a lasting bitterness. Medium bodied and a small amount of carbonation.
3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20 JorisPPattyn (7300) - Antwerpen, BELGIUM - MAY 18, 2013
Medium, yellow head over veiled, lively carbonated foxy-amber ale. Piney & fruity USA hops; caramelsyrup, fruitcake, bit of ureum. Smells sweet-syrupy, thick. Taste is quite bitter; resiny with a dry oatwafer background, rather than fruity and cake. MF is less full-bodied and resinous than the nose suggested. Hopoils abundant, with an oily, gluey resinflavour and -feel. Orangejam, orangerind, walnutpeel, but also streaks of spirit: apricotbrandy or even Mandarine Napoléon, if much less sweet. Well-carbonated. Bit unidimensional, but it could make the base of a truly great Barley Wine.
3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20 crazyvin (1692) - New York, USA - MAY 16, 2013
A nice clear dark amber body with a white head that had good retention and nice lace. There was a little bit of sediment at the bottom that slowly added an opaque quality to it. Aroma had some nice caramel malts and a decent hop profile. Hops seemed to favor the grapefruit spectrum of hops, but there was a nice floral presence. Flavor subtly sweet and nice and bitter. Hops seemed more balanced. The grapefruit hops were slightly stronger than the bitter hops and the floral hops, but not as much as the aroma indicated. Finish was smooth and slightly dry. Slightly heavy mouth feel.
3 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 12/20 Sperine (138) - North Wales, Pennsylvania, USA - MAY 5, 2013
Bottle purchased from Rogue Public Ale House in San Francisco. Although Rogue has put out some worthwhile beers, most I have tried have been poor to average. This falls square into the average category. Had potential too, very smooth.

Most beers are named after patron saints or founding fathers, explorer’s even but I couldn’t think of a grander gesture than a beer named after those fearless scallywags aboard the Northwestern in the Bering Sea. Now let us see if the beer pays homage to them! Into a snifter at just on cool. Huge pad of yeast on the base in the bottle doesn’t look too settled. A very seductive looking beer in the glass on first pour. Not bright by any chance but a deep set russet copper with very fine, well conditioned carbonation and capped off by a thick, messy, well held dollop of whipped cream. Sweet toffee and dark honey with a piercing, piney and herbal hop tickle on the nose and an undeniable buttery, burnt toast presence. Good hop and malt presence; not aggressively sweet nor aggressively bitter and cleaned up from the aroma. Burnt, slightly smoky and herbal finish with an ever present note of pine. Biscuity and rough Munich malt mid-palate with only a faded hint of chocolate - almost like overbaked choc cookies. Low carbonation gives it a foamy texture leading into an oily finish.Builds a note of bitter orange peel that is pleasant and keeps it surfaced. Very approachable Rogue ale I must say. Quite enjoyed it. Not outlandish and just as pleasing it is not boring. Cap’n Sig would dig this!! (1 pint, 6 Fl.Oz, no date stamp, Liquor Baron’s Ocean Reef)
3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20 ComradeK (731) - Blue Mountains, AUSTRALIA - MAY 1, 2013
650ml bottle. Pours a hazy deep amber, with a large off-white head, which lasts well and leaves reasonable lacing. Charry, slightly nutty malt is overlaid by fresh floral and fruity hops in the aroma. Strong floral and pine resin hops up front lead into a fruitier flavour. Nutty and biscuit malt come in at the mid-palate, with a slight spiciness and some pine hops in the finish. This offers quite a nice combination of hops and malt flavours. An enjoyable ale.
