COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Originally brewed and bottled for the 2001 National Craft Brewers Conference-a private bottling & release with no distribution. A second batch, Charlie Redux was brewed with very limited distribution. 2005 is the hat-trick batch, Charlie 1981 returns for a third time as part of John's Locker Stock!

Charlie 1981 is an unfiltered strong ale, it exhibits massive bitterness and a firm malt backbone. Hedonistic! Brewed using Pale Malt, Munich and Crystal 40 malts, Horizon, Sterling and Amarillo Hops. Estimated measurements are: 18.2 degrees Plato (OG), 3.5 Degrees Plato (TG), 75 IBU's, 8.5% ABV. Prost!

Charlie 1981 is named in honor of Charlie Papazian, president of the Association of Brewers, founder of the American Homebrewers Association and homebrewing guru. John Maier, Brewmaster for Rogue Ales, made his first batch of beer in 1981 using Papazian's influential book "The New Complete Joy of Homebrewing."

Enjoyed on tap in a whiskey snifter. The beer pours a light copper, with a small white head. The Amarillo hops add a nice note of piney/citrus to the nose, and some malt character is detectable. The palate is a nice balance of strong bitterness, accented with character malt-derived sweetness. The finish is nicely dry, and allows the beer to be extremely drinkable. Well done.

This one poured darker amber color with no head at all. Aroma was bittering hops, some piney notes, and malt sweetness. Flavor was more balanced than I would have hoped. Nice balance between bitter and piney hops and sweet slightly roasted malts.

Luscious red-tinged salmon-amber body with crisp creamed head. Initial floral and citrus hop aromatic burst that quickly subsides. Floral accented citrus body, good bitterness, with no noticeable alcohol despite this brew’s puissance. Not knowing the ABV, this would strike me as a decent APA/IPA. Solid malt backbone extends some warmth. Light caramel sweetness beneath the hops. Quite sessionable.

On tap at the santcuary. Amber pour with a nice sized off white head. Citrus and pine hop aroma. Flavor follows those lines, lots of sweet caramel malt to back it up. Long lasting bitter finish.

clear orange pour with a thick and lacy head. Aroma is floral, pine and grapefruit. The taste is sticky and resinous.

I guess I just wasn’t as impressed with this one as I’ve been with other Rogue offerings. It was the only one of the 5 samples that I did not finish. Clear, gold orange in color. Primarily caramel aromas but with floral and spicy hops thrown in. This definitely lives up to its description of bitterness, and combine that with the booziness and I just did not enjoy the flavor very much.

Unclear amber color with a light tan head, nice lacing. Strong dark caramel aroma with mild floral hops. Medium body. Big sharp caramel malty flavors with Rogues house earthy yeast. Lots of hop bitterness to finish. Standard Rogue strong ale.

Aroma: Big malt aroma with fruit esters and hops in abundance.
Appearance: Dark Brown in color, slight haze with a thin head.
Flavor: Roasty malt with a earth like tons in the flavor. This beer had some character.
Palate: Dry wheat/earthy finish, with a Good Mouthfeel.
Overall: I have always wanted to try this brew. It was huge and tasty. I liked the flavors and the brew was big.
