COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Originally brewed and bottled for the 2001 National Craft Brewers Conference-a private bottling & release with no distribution. A second batch, Charlie Redux was brewed with very limited distribution. 2005 is the hat-trick batch, Charlie 1981 returns for a third time as part of John's Locker Stock!

Charlie 1981 is an unfiltered strong ale, it exhibits massive bitterness and a firm malt backbone. Hedonistic! Brewed using Pale Malt, Munich and Crystal 40 malts, Horizon, Sterling and Amarillo Hops. Estimated measurements are: 18.2 degrees Plato (OG), 3.5 Degrees Plato (TG), 75 IBU's, 8.5% ABV. Prost!

Charlie 1981 is named in honor of Charlie Papazian, president of the Association of Brewers, founder of the American Homebrewers Association and homebrewing guru. John Maier, Brewmaster for Rogue Ales, made his first batch of beer in 1981 using Papazian's influential book "The New Complete Joy of Homebrewing."

I had been seeking this beer out in the DC metro region and I finally caught up with it on tap at the Brickskeller. Pours a deep, brownish amber with a creamy slightly tan head that left rings around the glass every stop to the bottom. Aroma is strong fruity hops, grapefruit, orange with a slight biscuity aroma. Flavor is heavy bitterness but the hops took on a tropical fruitiness I didn’t expect. Finish is dry and bitter. Very drinkable and unique.

(draft @ The Old Toad - Rochester, NY) Orange in color with a mound of puffy white foam. Aroma is rich and hoppy with some citrus at the end of it. Flavor is very bitter and hoppy with a light malt backbone and a little bit of grapefruit at the end. Finishes very smooth and bitter. Quite nice.

Cask, served perhaps a day or two after preferred date. Cloudy orange/amber with very little head. Big hop nose and flavor with an earthy malt backbone. Lightly piney floral hop character and a lingering pleasant bitterness. Very, very smooth. Nice.

UPDATED: MAR 6, 2008 On tap at El bait Shop Des Moines. Aroma is all hops, not that this is a bad thing. A light amber color.... almost orange. Hazy with a tight head that produces a good lace. Taste is again lots of hops, with a good grapefruit fruity/bittherness flavor. This is no citrusy cascade hoppy beer though, it’s bitter through and through. The beer is absolutely delicious. Palate is sharp and strong. I was amazed to find out that this brew was 8.5 abv, which is not to say that this strongly bitter beer was smooth in any way, however none of the "roughness" came from alcohol. A fantastic beer, I hope it’s not another three to five years before it’s available again.

draft from locker stock. Hazy red beer. Aroma is hoppy with a touch of roasted malt. Flavor is hops. Just like the description promised. It is a great beer for a hophead but I can see where some of the reviews aren’t raving about this beer.

Draft at Rustico in Alexandria, VA. Appearance was hazy and rust colored. Aroma is subtle with hop and malt characteristics. Mouthfeel has a strong bitterness that is well balanced by malt sweetness. Some oak notes in the flavor as well which lend a dry and warming character to the beer. Finish is dry and bitter with a hint of alcohol. Not quite as complex as I’d expected.

Draught at Happy Gnome, St. Paul. Creamy, caramelly aroma that is rich, sweet, vinous and has oak aged character. Hazy dark red body with a good sized tan head. Some good lace. Molasses aspect in the flavor. Pretty good, though not outstanding, which is about par for the course with Rogue.
