COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Originally brewed and bottled for the 2001 National Craft Brewers Conference-a private bottling & release with no distribution. A second batch, Charlie Redux was brewed with very limited distribution. 2005 is the hat-trick batch, Charlie 1981 returns for a third time as part of John's Locker Stock!

Charlie 1981 is an unfiltered strong ale, it exhibits massive bitterness and a firm malt backbone. Hedonistic! Brewed using Pale Malt, Munich and Crystal 40 malts, Horizon, Sterling and Amarillo Hops. Estimated measurements are: 18.2 degrees Plato (OG), 3.5 Degrees Plato (TG), 75 IBU's, 8.5% ABV. Prost!

Charlie 1981 is named in honor of Charlie Papazian, president of the Association of Brewers, founder of the American Homebrewers Association and homebrewing guru. John Maier, Brewmaster for Rogue Ales, made his first batch of beer in 1981 using Papazian's influential book "The New Complete Joy of Homebrewing."

On draft at Green Leafe, Williamsburg. Robust amber hue with a rusty tinge, delivered with a firm head that slowly settled into a thin foam cap. Light floral hoppy aroma which left me a bit off guard on the first swallow ... thick and vicuous, stiffly alcoholic with a big hop oil undertow, too. Quality brew. Strong ... but I’m glad the bartender accidentally gave me a full glass.(#2732, 3/4/2007)

2/21/2011: Rogue Charlie 1981... Aroma: NONE! Appearance: Hazy, true amber color; frothy off-white head and dense lacing. Flavor: Slightly nutty with citrus/white grapefruit peel bitterness; sour twang in the middle; the strength is well-hidden. Palate: Body is medium-weight; cask-like mouthfeel, yet slick and oily/soapy. Overall: Decent flavor, but underwhelming (as expected); interestingly, this beer has nearly the same flavor profile as the NABC Beak’s Best, but is stronger and over-done and not as good even though this beer is bigger - I guess that proves that bigger is not always better!

Draught sample (8.5% ABV) at New Albanian Brewing Company in New Albany, IN. Rating #205 for this beer.

Beese (1802) - Watford, Hertfordshire, ENGLAND - JUL 23, 2013
Draft at The Green Dragon in Portland, OR on 4 June 2013. Pours a hazy copper with a thin off-white head. Strong aroma of malts and bitter hop notes. Big flavours; quite a lot of initial bitterness, more than I was expecting, but it turns to sweetness with the heavy malt and alcohol.

Upwards of 10% alcohol. A very strong American Strong Ale. At the Brew Pub it comes in a goblet. Highly recommended.

This hits you right in the face. Strong in everything, malty aroma with hops fighting for attention. Malty flavour, as if saying, I’m an ale, not a lager. Finish falls off the table. Something doesn’t quite gel, but worth drinking

On draught at Rogue Distillery and Public House. Deep brown color. Malty, citrus hop aroma. Hoppy bitterness matched with good maltiness. Finishes with a little bitter kick.

On tap at Capones, Hazy orange pour, minimal head, great lacing. Tasted like an extreme pale ale. Slightly german in flavor. Lemony hop finish. Not bad.

durhambeer (2500) - Durham, North Carolina, USA - AUG 5, 2011
On tap at the Federal in Durham. Pours hazy orange-tinted bright gold with a barely noticeable head. Nose is sweet, showing lots of malt competing with fruity hops as well. Orange and grapefruit, pineapple, and resin, bit also caramel and butter/butterscotch. An odd beast, and probably not the pint I needed after 3 others. Palate was heavy and sticky, as was the air outside.

Sampled on tap at PIB. Pours a cloudy orange/amber. Aroma of yeast, butterscotch, caramel, and tropical fruits such as pineapple. Flavour of tropical fruits, peach, and caramel. Full bodied - slight perfume detected though.

Sampled on tap at PIB, pours hazy dark orange with a small beige head. Aroma of caramel / butterscotch, tropical fruits (peach, pineapple) and booze. Flavour of caramel, dark fruits and booze - the booze sort of cancels out some of the other qualities. Solid.

On tap at the brickstore. Deep orange pour with a white head. All citrus aroma and nice bubblegum flavor. Caramel malt adds a nice body and balance to this drink.
