COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Dedicated to Spanish author Juan de la Cueva, who, in 1575, wrote of a Mexican dish that combined seedless chipotles with beer: Chipotle Ale is based on Rogue’s Oregon Golden Ale, but delicately spiced with smoked chipotle chile peppers. Deep golden in color with a tight head, rich malty aroma, delicately smooth and crisp flavor, and subtle chipotle chili finish. Formerly known and packages as Mexicali Rogue, Chipotle Ale is created from Northwest Harrington, Klages, and Maier Munich Malts; Willamette and Cascade hops; and Smoked Jalapeno (Chipolte) Peppers. Chipotle Ale is targeted for spring release and available in a 22-ounce bottle and on draft. Blend it with Rogue Chocolate Stout and create a Mole’ black and tan!

[bottle from LCBO (King Edward)] Pleasant grapefruit and pine hops aroma with a touch of smoky vegetable that fades in after caramel malt. Almost clear reddish copper under dense white foam that drops to a big island and ring. Nice caramel malt flavour up front that comes in with nice US hops. This quickly fades to smoky, slightly vegetal pepper that is potent, but not overly assertive. This beer is exactly what it says. Very solid ale with chipotle peppers. Medium body, moderate to medium carbonation, spicy feel on lips and inner lips is there, but mild. Very well controlled and balanced. I’m impressed, though I don’t think that chipotle beer is overly delicious.

Bomber into a pint glass. Sweet and definitely smokey and actually finishes with a solid hint of the spiciness from the peppers. Enjoyable!

Bottle @ home. Hazy, burnt orange appearance with an ivory head. Moderately peppery, spicy, somewhat smoky, light pale malty nose. Fairly peppery, mildly spicy, quite vegetal, light malty flavor. Too much veggie for me.

pours with light carbonation, initial impressions: light bodied, hops up front, rising smokiness and bitter jalapeno spicy finish. Low depth, med-low complexity and short-med length. An interesting beer if you haven’t tried it before. But only worth trying once and would be better if paired with food.

on tap-pours a light tan head that laces and amber color. Aroma is chipotle/peat, some roasty. Taste is plenty of chipotle/peat/roasty-medium malt, some spice hops. Nice chipotle up front, not a lot at finish.

Draft at the brewpub in Portland. Deep dark amber color. Aroma of scotch. Taste has smoked malt and bacon. Interesting.

650 ml bottle from LCBO. Pours a very slightly hazy orange-amber with average-sized off-white head. Aroma is full of smoke and jalapeno with a little sweet biscuit. Flavour is smoky toffee and biscuit with some moderate, lingering jalapeno heat towards the end. An interesting beer to try once but don’t forsee seeking another one out.
