Commercial Description:
Dedicated to Spanish author Juan de la Cueva, who, in 1575, wrote of a Mexican dish that combined seedless chipotles with beer: Chipotle Ale is based on Rogue's Oregon Golden Ale, but delicately spiced with smoked chipotle chile peppers. Deep golden in color with a tight head, rich malty aroma, delicately smooth and crisp flavor, and subtle chipotle chili finish. Formerly known and packages as Mexicali Rogue, Chipotle Ale is created from Northwest Harrington, Klages, and Maier Munich Malts; Willamette and Cascade hops; and Smoked Jalapeno (Chipolte) Peppers. Chipotle Ale is targeted for spring release and available in a 22-ounce bottle and on draft. Blend it with Rogue Chocolate Stout and create a Mole' black and tan!

Measurements: 12 degrees Plato, IBU 35, Apparent attenuation 82, Lovibond 23

I always wondered if this would taste better on tap than from a bottle (in terms of chili bite), but the one time I ever saw it on tap, the bartender informed me they were all out. Oh well. It’s a decent beer. It pours a hazy amber in color with a foamy off-white head. I couldn’t sense the peppers in the aroma, it was more malty than anything else. The flavor was fairly balanced, with the spiciness arriving with the aftertaste and lingering from some time. As a fan of spice, I was hoping for a bit more intensity (like that beer with the jalapeno peper in every can), but it was definitely interesting.

Pours a reddish brown, with a white head. Aroma is of spice, peppers, malt, and meats. Not very inviting. Taste is peppers, cheap canned chili, and malt. Burning aftertaste. I don’t normally like my beer to destroy my throat with heat. 22oz is way too much of this beer to have to drink.

2008 Bottle - Pours brown with a light head, I just can’t get my head around this beer, didn’t like it years ago, still don’t, aroma is okay, smokey, almost chemically smokey...flavour is like old bandaids, I love beer and I love spice, but this is a beer one drinks to experience, not to enjoy....

Caveat: this beer gave me horrible hartburn. So even though, I ’m sure it’s a good beer for the style, I just couldn’t give it high marks in the overall, mainly cause i couldn’t finish the bottle. Pours a nice clear amber with decent head. Aroma is slightly spicy. Flavor is not overbearingly hot, it’s the finish. A fiery lava flow in the back of the throat. Not a beer for me.

Pour courtesy of kiefdog. Aroma is very smokey, earthy, and and cuminy with notes of chili pepper. Flavor is band-aid with hot sauce. Cannot imagine more than a small amount in one sitting, but it makes a great fondue. A bit of water in the flavor, too.

65cl bottle from Willow Bend Liquors (Tampa, FL). Pours a hazy dark amber color with one finger off-white head. Good retention and lacing. Aroma is smoky with notes of cooked veggies, cooked meat, and malt. Flavor is very smoky with strong roasted chipotle pepper notes that tend to dispense with any other flavors coming through. Interesting, there is a little spicy heat that comes through toward finish and remains after finish. Generally light to medium body with a smoky, spicy finish.
