craftycarl21 (120), USA Apr 2, 2008 hoppy for a stout, great chocolate hit to the senses- beautiful brownish head with gorgeous lacing. bitter chocolate with hops and malt, strong flavor overall. palate is solid, with a bitter aftertaste resulting from the chocolate. overall delicious, especially under the sweet stout category- magnificently to maintain beer taste, doesn’t get overwhelmed by the chocolate. great stuff.
LordBeamish (125), Boozetown, Ontario, Canada Jul 25, 2008 650 ml bottle: I was greatly anticipating this one because I love the Rogue Hazlenut Brown Nectar soooo much. At first sip, I found that there was too much coffee flavour in this beer. In fact, at the beginning I thought this should be more appropriately labelled a porter. However, as this beer warmed I begain to appreciate the complexity and rich flavours. I definately noticed the cocoa and chocolate overatures. A solid stout with bold flavours. However, I would still take a Young’s Double Chocolate Stout ahead of this one. kmweaver (1813), Takoma Park, Maryland, USA Jul 21, 2008 22oz bottle. Had this any number of times before (one of my first craft beers), yet never got around to rating it. Pours a dark, chocolate-brown color; medium tan head with good retention and fine-bubbled lacing. Lots of cocoa, dark chocolate, and lightly toasted malts in the aroma; very dry, intricate chocolatiness with a touch of oatmeal; basic mineral bitterness. Medium-to-full mouthfeel: dark chocolate, dry cocoa, softly roasted and toasted malts; very pleasant, dry presence in the mouth; some vanilla and oatmeal; light mineral bitterness on the perimeter, keeping things balanced; very drinkable, very tasty stuff overall. Generous without succumbing to heft. Lengthy finish: very dry overall: bitter dark chocolate, cocoa throughout, toasted malts, oats, and light roastiness. Excellent. fidel (69), Livermore, California, USA Jul 20, 2008 Black, creamy, smooth, milk chocolate, alcohol, coffee, nutty, dry, slight bitter finish. gameface23 (44), Haverhill, Massachusetts, USA Jul 20, 2008 Pours a dark ebony with a fluffy tan head. Nose of chocolate and some toasted malt. Taste was bitter, similar to 90% dark chocolate. jrmac (116), USA Jul 19, 2008 Bottle was a little out od date, but it still was rocking enough to make mr try a newer one. I’ll re rate this soon
