COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
After the death of his wife, Henry Jackson Smart was left to raise his 6 young children alone. His courage, love, selflessness and dedication inspired his daughter, Sonora Smart Dodd, to organize the first Father’s Day on June 19th, 1910. In 1924 President Calvin Coolidge proclaimed the third Sunday in June as Father’s Day. President Nixon, in 1972, established it as a permanent day of national observance.

Dad’s Little Helper Black IPA is deep mahogany in color with roasted malt and hop aromas and dense creamy head. It enters the palate with intense hop flavor and coats the tongue with a rich maltiness from the Rogue Farms Risk Malt.

Pours a very dark almost black amber color with a tan head that leaves a little lacing. Chocolate and roasted malt nose. Good malty backbone with a hoppy bite at the end, bit of mocha and currant in the flavor as well. Decent black IPA.

Served on tap in a pint glass Appearance – The beer is served a nearly pitch black color with a one finger head of tan foam. The head fades over a moderate amount of time leaving a rather decent level of streaky lace on the sides of the glass. Smell – The aroma is a nice blend of roast and hop with a rather strong showing of a both citrus and pine hops. The roast has with it some aromas of chocolate and caramel as well as a little bit of sweet caramel, which overall produces a nice hoped and roasted blend. Taste – The taste begins with a heavy roasted malt taste along with a decent showing of some pine hop and a little bit of a grapefruit taste. At the start there is a little bit of a chocolate flavor which ends up dwindling as the taste moves on further to the end. While the chocolate fades, a little bit of a coffee flavor and more roast take its place. More hop flavors of both an earthy and more grapefruit flavor join the taste profile more toward the end, and mix with the rest of the flavors as well as a newly arrived light cola like taste, to leave a rather crisp and decently mixed hop flavor to linger on the tongue. Mouthfeel – The body of the beer is on thinner side with a carbonation level that is on the slightly higher side. The feel was a little off for me with a lower carbonation level and thicker body likely better accentuating the roasted and hopped flavors of the brew. Overall – A rather decent black IPA, but nothing all that exceptional overall. A nice one to try, but really not worth the added price of the bomber or on tap in comparison to some of the other black IPA’s out there in 12 oz-ers

Poured from a bomber with no bottling date on it. Aroma - Roasty - dark chocolate - some malt, but not getting a lot of hop aroma. Appearance - black at night...small finger of head - decent lacing Palate - nice lingering affect. Definitely a bite at the end of the tongue and a nice lingering taste. Overall - Good beer, tastes kinda like a stout almost..not overly hoppy but a solid beer.

Bomber. Poured black (cola like), nice foamy tan head but no real lacing on the glass. Aroma of roasted malts, grain and hints of hops. Taste toasty malts, slightly bitterness from hops. Very enjoyable, and quite drinkable, really liked this one.

Bomber from LCBO, served cold in a tulip glass.

App.: Deep brown-black with a nice light mocha head. Aroma: Rich dark-roasted malts married with fairly pungent American hops, leafy, resinous, dank, citrus, molasses, dark brown sugar, a little coffee and dark chocolate, a slight savoury/soy sauce note, somewhat peppery, milk chocolate in the finish. Palate: Medium to medium-full carbonation with medium-low carbonation. Flav.: Fairly hop-forward with peppery/spiciness, dank/resinous character, rich chocolate and coffee dark-roasted malt, a touch savoury; quite dry with fairly full bitterness and a long, dark-roasted and dankly hoppy finish.

Not exactly what I seek in a BIPA, but close enough.

Sample at Great British Beer Festival 2014. Deep amber/brown beer with a small beige head. Chocolate aroma, hay, grass, iron notes, fruity, cocoa, some licorice. Hoppy chocolate flavor, grass, licorice, cocoa, floral notes, some tar. Decent black IPA.

Appearance: Pours a dark brown with two fingers of dense tan head that lingers over five minutes leaving a thick lacing. Aroma: Molasses, syrop, malt, caramel, smoke. Flavours: Molasses, pine resin, hops, burnt malt, some coffee and coca. Mouthfeel: Thick and creamy with moderate carbonation. Overall: A wonderful Black IPA with many aromas and flavours. Each time I take another sip, I come across new flavours.

Pours a very dark black with reddish highlights around the edges when back lit. Nice, slightly off-white head leaving considerable lacing behind. On the nose, some chocolate, toffee, some pine, and quite a bit of tea leaves. The mouthfeel is leaning towards thick and sticky. Tastes are of pine, coffee, red grapes, Overall, the abv is prevalent and you’ll start to feel it after drinking only a couple of fingers. Still, drinks very easy for the style. This is another nice offering from Rogue.
