After the death of his wife, Henry Jackson Smart was left to raise his 6 young children alone. His courage, love, selflessness and dedication inspired his daughter, Sonora Smart Dodd, to organize the first Father’s Day on June 19th, 1910. In 1924 President Calvin Coolidge proclaimed the third Sunday in June as Father’s Day. President Nixon, in 1972, established it as a permanent day of national observance. Dad’s Little Helper Black IPA is deep mahogany in color with roasted malt and hop aromas and dense creamy head. It enters the palate with intense hop flavor and coats the tongue with a rich maltiness from the Rogue Farms Risk Malt. Draught at Bjergtrolden. Dark with a very large light brown head, fine lacings. Aroma heavy malty (roasted, burnt) and hoppy (spicy). Flavor moderate sweet, heavy bitter of dark malts and hops, long lasting, some spicyness. Medium body. Uhm.

Bottle. Black with a fizzy white head, Chocolate, roasted cereal grain, citrus, and bread aroma and taste with a nice crisp dark earthy and woody finish that has hints of spruce. Slick oily palate that works with the rest of the elements of this brew. A damn tasty black IPA.

Tap @ Beer Temple. Deep dark color, but not quite black. Head is beige, quickly disappearing, but leaves lacerings. Aroma’s of roasted malt, licorice/drop and resiny hops. Flavor is medium bitter, hard roast. Medium bodied. Finishes with some more resin, a bit of ash and a long lasting firm bitter taste. Good.

Pretty good dark IPA. Rogue always does great with their beers and this one is a winner too.

Sampled at an esbls tasting. I brought it. From Randalls. Very black with a tan head. Licorice and toasty malt nose. The hopsvare nice here and they give some spice and fruit. A nice representation of the style. Not bad but not my style.

(bottle - 22 oz) Dark brown/black pour with a fluffy tan head. Coffee and roasted aroma almost with a hint of licorice. Some nice juicy and citrusy hops as well. The citrus and bitter hop notes are very apparent in the flavor at the start and then mixed with that roasted bitterness which only enhances the bitter of the hops. Smooth and clean on the finish with a light bitter parting.
