After the death of his wife, Henry Jackson Smart was left to raise his 6 young children alone. His courage, love, selflessness and dedication inspired his daughter, Sonora Smart Dodd, to organize the first Fatherís Day on June 19th, 1910. In 1924 President Calvin Coolidge proclaimed the third Sunday in June as Fatherís Day. President Nixon, in 1972, established it as a permanent day of national observance. Dadís Little Helper Black IPA is deep mahogany in color with roasted malt and hop aromas and dense creamy head. It enters the palate with intense hop flavor and coats the tongue with a rich maltiness from the Rogue Farms Risk Malt. Bottle as shown. Pours a dark amber with medium frothy beige head leaving sticky lacing. The aroma is floral hops and bready malt. Thin mouthfeel with a bitter hop and roasted malt with lingering bitter finish. A good black IPA from Rogue.

On tap at St. Augustineís, pours a dark brown with an amber tinge and a small beige head. Aroma of toasted nuts, light malts and some burnt notes. Flavour of burnt malt, extremely high astringency - not balanced at all with the charred notes and astringency dominating. Not crafted well - subpar.

22 oz bottle. Dark reddish/brown with a foamy, thick, light tan head. Mild aroma of citrus, cocoa, floral and pine. Flavor is bitter hops, dark roasted malt, some acidic coffee and caramel. Medium body with average carbonation and a dry, bitter finish. Nice tasty beer, aroma is a bit lacking though.

22 ounce bottle into pint glass, no bottle dating. Pours crystal clear dark reddish brown color with a nice 2 finger fairly dense tan head with great retention, that reduces to a nice cap that lingers. Some decent spotty lacing on the glass. Aromas of chocolate, roasted malt, biscuit, herbal, floral, earth, coffee, pine, and slight citrus. Some decent aromas with good strength and balance. Taste of big chocolate, roasted malt, coffee, earth, pine, floral, grapefruit, toast, and herbal spiciness. Fair amount of spicy bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of chocolate, roasted malt, coffee, earth, pine, citrus, and herbal spiciness on the finish for a good bit. Very nice balance of bitterness with roasted malt flavors. Medium carbonation and body; with a creamy and slightly chalky mouthfeel that isnít detrimental. Alcohol is very well hidden with only a slight warming after the finish noticed. Overall this is a really nice black IPA. This has a good balance between the roasted malt and hop flavors, which I tend to prefer in the style. Very enjoyable stuff.
