After the death of his wife, Henry Jackson Smart was left to raise his 6 young children alone. His courage, love, selflessness and dedication inspired his daughter, Sonora Smart Dodd, to organize the first Fatherís Day on June 19th, 1910. In 1924 President Calvin Coolidge proclaimed the third Sunday in June as Fatherís Day. President Nixon, in 1972, established it as a permanent day of national observance. Dadís Little Helper Black IPA is deep mahogany in color with roasted malt and hop aromas and dense creamy head. It enters the palate with intense hop flavor and coats the tongue with a rich maltiness from the Rogue Farms Risk Malt. Bottle. Pours near black. Two fingers of creamy white head. Scents of hops, malts, and some citrus flavors as well. However, coffee flavor comes about when it touches the tongue and it finishes more like a porter than an IPA. Very surprising flavor and finish, doesn?t really taste like an IPA.

Dark amber and clear. Has a white head, medium duration. Roasted aroma, toasted bread, some hoppy notes too. Citrus. Flavor starts sweet, roasted, finish hoppy, ,moderate bitter.

650 mL bottle. This one was a little disappointing. It wasnít until the beer was pretty much room temperature that it actually began to fill out in flavour and body. Not enough caramel from the malt, and not enough flavour from the hops.

Cracked open this bottle just as my 6 week old son awoke from his afternoon nap & it pours a beautiful darkness with a creamy burnt sugar cap. Itís almost not a black ipa, as the the hops only surface in the rear & are not as sharp as expected. I get swirls of bitter dark coffee, pine resin & malt shop sugars in each sip. The finish is bristling with bitterness. Not as bad as some reviewers below me make it to be, but also not the strongest interpretation of the style. Gotta go, baby is about to lose his shit & cry. Cheers.

Cask gravity at 2014 GBBF. Dark caramel coloured pour with a loose tan head. Aroma is sweet malts, nutty, hint of choc, berry, raisin. Not much hop in the nose. Palate is sticky sweet lowish carbonation. Flavour is nutty malts, dark choc, sweet malts with dried fruits. Hint of smoke, where are the hops. Fails as a black ipa., more like a porter.

Scopey (6651) - Croydon, Greater London, ENGLAND - AUG 13, 2014
Cask gravity at GBBF 2014. It pours deep brown with minimal head. The nose is toasty, caramel, roasty, cocoa and dirt. The taste is sweet, oily, chocolate, earth, decent bitterness, ash, burned wood and oily with a dry finish. Medium and low carbonation. Oily, probably would have been a lot better on keg.

Cask - Light roast, pine hops and a weird off aroma. Dark brown with no head. Pine and herbs with some dark malts and a bitter finish. Not very appealing.

[Bottle (650ml)] Pours a very dark amber-brown with an average size long-lasting fluffy tan head and lots of lacing. Aroma of hops first followed by toasted malt and chocolate. Flavour of roasted malt, hops and a bit of chocolate. Dry, roasty bitter finish. Medium bodied. Pretty good, a solid Black IPA.

Dark coffee pour, medium beige head. Quite roasty aroma, dark charred grains, coffee, bitter cocoa, the soightest grass, hay hops. Very bitter finish with again, just a slight hay or grass hoppiness. This is just a bitter porter, im not getting much hoppiness. Still a good tasty beer, just lacks some solid ipa character.

bottle. Deep brown with one finger head. Black IPA that is more of a brown IPA. Medium malt base, maybe a bit lighter in malt which accounts for the color difference. Reasonable hops with medium bitterness. Just average.
