Brigadier (1220), Chagrin Falls, Ohio, USA Jul 3, 2007 22 oz bottle at pre-RBSG tasting
I brought this along because something compelled me to pick it up at Riley’s on a recent trip. Even at $2.99 it was probably overpriced but unfortunately you can’t return beer just because it seemed like a bad thing to pick (if you could, there are any number of other beers that I might have done that with). This is a malt liquor - you can say what you want about it but the result is the same. The only difference between this and a 40 oz can is that this is ever so slightly more palateable.
Aroma / Appearance - What is there to say about something so simple? Corn forms the base of the aroma which has a bit of an odd funk to it. The clear transparent body hides nothing from sight. Perhaps that’s why people drink it out of a brown paper bag. That way you don’t have to see what it is you are trying to get down.
Flavor / Palate - Corn is the order of the day here. There’s no complexity at all though it is suprisingly drinkable. The alcohol is thinly disguised by the pseduo-malts but comes through in the end. All I have to say is that if I were to open this by myself about 12 ounces would be going down the drain. It isn’t a drain pour due to lack of quality to style. It’s just that the style as a whole is one that doesn’t deserve much attention. kkearn (995), Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA Jun 30, 2007 Bottle. Orange yellow color, with a moderate sized white head. Faint aroma of corn and some malt. Fairly thin flavor, some malt but mostly adjuncts. Ok for a novelty beer, but nothing i’d ever buy again. radagast83 (1273), Fairfax, Virginia, USA Jun 28, 2007 Possibly the best malt liquor I’ve ever had? I knew what I was getting into when I bought this beer. I expected the palate to be slightly watery, bland, and have hints of gasoline and burnt corn. Surprisingly I was pretty off on all of that, pretty smooth, and not too rough for a malt liquor. demitriustown (689), Shelby Township, Michigan, USA Jun 28, 2007 Bomber: Spicey, somewhat of a grain note, a little malt characteristics, and somewhat of a pilsener scent. Pours just like any other malt liqour a golden but not totally clear on this one. Dencent. Taste is malt liqour like, with a slight spiciness, but rally tastes like a little bit better than a regular malt liqour. Palate is watery with a little spice lingering throughout. Overall, I have to reiterate the other ratebeerians. It’s Ok nothing special. sliffy (1966), Columbus, Ohio, USA Jun 26, 2007 Pre-RBSG Milwaukee: Bottle: Poured a clear golden color with a white head. Aroma of corn and bready malts. Flavor, corn, pale malts, sweet. You can dress it up all you want but you are still drinking malt liquor. biz82 (1328), austin, Texas, USA Jun 26, 2007 Thought I’d try this one on Father’s Day but I could’ve done better. It really tastes like malt liquor and that’s the problem. It’s super sweet and alcoholic with meaty and metallic notes. Not too good. beerbill (1920), Laurel, New York, USA Jun 24, 2007 22 oz. bottle. I meant to drink this last weekend for Father’s Day and forgot I had this in the refrigerator. Pours a hazy antique gold with a moderate white sudsy head that quickly disappeared. Strong aroma of corn typical in a malt liquor along with some tart green apple aromas. Flavor is corn and malt with a crisp finish. I did not find this beer to be particularly harsh for a malt liquor, or in general for that matter. Easily finished off the bomber with my barbecued hot dogs for lunch. Talk about a meal for dad, malt liquor and hot dogs, it doesn’t get much better than that! SuzyGreenberg (1318), Seattle, Washington, USA Jun 23, 2007 22 oz. bottle - pours clear and gold; malt and slight fruity aromas; tastes sweet and very basic for a rogue brew
