COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Dead Guy is a German-style Maibock made with Rogue’s proprietary "PacMan" ale yeast. It is deep honey in color with a malty aroma, rich hearty flavor and a well balanced finish. Dead Guy is created from Northwest Harrington, Klages, Maier Munich and Carastan malts, along with Perle and Saaz Hops.
In the early 1990s Dead Guy Ale was created as a private tap sticker to celebrate the Mayan Day of the Dead (November 1st, All Souls Day) for Casa U Betcha in Portland, Oregon. The Dead Guy design proved popular and was incorporated into a bottled product a few years later with MaierBock as the elixir.

This beer is more typical of my disappointment with Rogue than the Imperial IPA, which I’m a huge fan of. Dead Guy is pretty much just that - lifeless, unexciting, slightly sticky malt body with some dank graveyard weeds serving for hops.

UPDATED: MAR 8, 2003 A cloudy, brownish red in color. Hops are nice and citrusy with a floral hint but are slightly overpowered by a sweet malt. Thick, sticky mouthfeel without much carbonation. Interesting but far from great.

Ordered a draft of this stuff. Very undistinguishing. Pretty hoppy but much too sweet which weighs down the tastebuds. I found this beer to be extremely filling - I declined to finish my glass. Has that ultra-generic ’microbrew’ flavor that I HATE - see: any Pete’s brew, all seasonal Sam Adams, any Sierra Nevada, etc. Boring. Bloaty. Bleh.

A very nice, unique bock. A good balance of yeast and hops. Pleasant amber color, very easy to drink.

UPDATED: OCT 22, 2005 Bottle. Head is initially small, frothy, off-white, fully diminishing. Body is medium amber. Aroma is moderately malty (caramel, toasted bread), moderately hoppy (apricot, herbs). Flavor is moderately sweet, lightly bitter, moderately acidic. Finish is lightly sweet, moderately acidic, moderately bitter. Medium body, watery texture, lively carbonation. Strikingly average and certainly not bock-like or German in character at all. Smells like an American amber ale or perhaps an English strong ale.

Wonderful beer. Nice and hoppy, not too heavy on the malt. Much fresher taste on tap than in the bottle.

UPDATED: APR 29, 2003 butter yeasty aroma that causes as many smiles as hanging out with Team Fucked Up at the beach. It just says drink me. Excellent ballance, all I can say is that it makes me smile. Good hops, malts seem really strong as well. Awsome.

Bock?!?!? Hoppy and bitter. Cloudy and reddish copper. No head to speak of. There’s a little maltiness in there but not like a real bock. Ale yeast for a bock, interesting. A different sort of brew, not terrible, but not good enough to be really interesting.

The medium-brown color gives a hint of the subtle complexity of this unique ale. Overall, it has a medium body, but, as ales go, it is very rich. There is a subtle maltiness and a lot of hops. There are very vague, yet enjoyable, hints of flowers and caramel. Nice finish, too.

It tastes like alcohol, smells like alcohol...looks like alcohol? Well, it also tastes like flowers. Not bad, I guess. Very hoppy.
