COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Dead Guy is a German-style Maibock made with Rogue’s proprietary "PacMan" ale yeast. It is deep honey in color with a malty aroma, rich hearty flavor and a well balanced finish. Dead Guy is created from Northwest Harrington, Klages, Maier Munich and Carastan malts, along with Perle and Saaz Hops.
In the early 1990s Dead Guy Ale was created as a private tap sticker to celebrate the Mayan Day of the Dead (November 1st, All Souls Day) for Casa U Betcha in Portland, Oregon. The Dead Guy design proved popular and was incorporated into a bottled product a few years later with MaierBock as the elixir.

Hazy amber, creamy off-white head, foamy lacing. Floral and toffee aromas. Has a bit of a metallic taste (bottle pour into shaker glass, so containers not the source) and a tad on the bitter side. Medium-bodied.

The scent is that of cherries. The flavor, however, has an earthy residue. It’s almost as if someone had pureed the entire redwood forest and filled it into a bottle. At the same time, there is a weird, abnormally cringe-worthy tinge to the beer. I could compare it to sidewalk chalk or children’s medicine. The bottle art isn’t enough to scrub the quasi-gross aftertaste out of your mind. Oh yeah...and the color is like ship rust. Not that it matters.

Had this one on tap. Pours an orangey gold. Grassy aromas. Hoppy, malty, and kind of sweet. Big flavors.

(Bottle) A nice looking beer as commercially described. Malt forward and nicely balanced with hops. Not overpowering; a mild and enjoyable flavor with subtle sweetness. I gotta remember this around Halloween.

aroma of grass, earthiness, honey and caramel/toffee in that order..appearance of a cloudy red/lightbrown beer with lacing and enduring head which finally becomes a ring..taste has all of the above malty floavors from the aroma but..surprise! tingly hops as well that arent upfront in the aroma nice balance of each..tingly on the palate leaves a bitter then sweet aftertaste a pleasure to drink

UPDATED: NOV 22, 2010 Bottle @ Henrik, Bergen. A thin white top forms over a very ordinary-looking clear orange ale body. Smell is fruity hops with some malt and citrus tones. Taste is complex hops with flavors in the range of grassy-to-slightly-fruity. Not bad, but not very impressive either. Then again, this is my second Heller Bock and my first was completely different so I guess I’m not really familiar with the style. Or there’s some freak categorization accidents going on. :-P

650 ml bottle at JD McGillicuddy’s in Phiily. Here for the Coheed Show next door at the Electric Company! Nice dark copper pour with a thin head. This place served it at a nice temp (I meen not cold cold) and the flavor really came out. Hops, cinnamon, wheat, dark lightly smoked malts. It’s about time I rated this beer.
