COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Dead Guy is a German-style Maibock made with Rogue’s proprietary "PacMan" ale yeast. It is deep honey in color with a malty aroma, rich hearty flavor and a well balanced finish. Dead Guy is created from Northwest Harrington, Klages, Maier Munich and Carastan malts, along with Perle and Saaz Hops.
In the early 1990s Dead Guy Ale was created as a private tap sticker to celebrate the Mayan Day of the Dead (November 1st, All Souls Day) for Casa U Betcha in Portland, Oregon. The Dead Guy design proved popular and was incorporated into a bottled product a few years later with MaierBock as the elixir.

Growler pour, courtesy of Greg. Pours a murky amber with thin beige head and some spotted lace. Nose of caramel, honey, cardboard, dark fruit. Medium body, really hot for 6.6%, mild bitterness on the finish. Haven’t had this in years but remember it being better.

Pours brown. Aroma of red licorice, brown sugar, malt, molasses: nice. Tastes of the same: smooth and sweet. Lingering bittersweet aftertaste. Flavourful yet sessionable.

I could tell you about the aroma, the appearance the palate. But I wont waste your time: This was simply, the most delicious beer I have had the pleasure of drinking in a very, very long time. If I had the choice, I would drink nothing else. Spectacular work Rogue.

Pours a caramel color. Aroma is very sweet- caramel and toffee. Taste contains more bitter or dry elements than I would expect based on the coloration and taste, and I think that’s a good thing. Hops upfront quickly melt into a Werther’s original candy type taste that is sweet, but not overly sweet. I guess I’m a little picky in some respects for a guy who’ll drink adjunct lagers when finances dictate- I enjoy some malty beers, but when they taste a little too much like candy, that can be a turn-off, and when they get a little too roasted and burnt, that can be a turn-off. This definitely is not the latter. It has some aspects of the former, but skirts the line nicely with the upfront hoppiness and not overdoing it on the backend sweetness despite the base backend flavor being similar to beers that cross the line. I would say a good beer, but not spectacular. Nicely avoids some common pitfalls, but it’s aim isn’t to the side of the bock equation I’d aim for. I think I would raise my rating a lot if it were only relative to beers that smell and somewhat taste like candy. But in a world where not all beers do, just a solid beer (Which is nothing to sneeze at).

pours a light copper with a medium beige head. aroma of grass/hay and malt. Nice malty taste. Some mild hop bitter arrives in the middle and goes into a pleasant hop presence on the finish. Not syrupy like many bocks. A really good balanced beer.

Pours with almost no head. More on the malt (caramel, nutty feel) side but with a nice touch of extra hops in the end which is a bit unusual for this style (but expected considering it s made in USA)

Hallstein (200) - Skogn, NORWAY - MAR 10, 2015
Aroma is strongly malty with notes of marmelade, fruits, raisin and slight vanilla. Mouthfeel is nice and slick with a medium amount of carbonation. The flavor is definately malty, sweet and marmelade-ish with some butterscotch and vanilla. Finish has some slight spice, probably from the hops. Definately a really nice beer!
