Commercial Description:
Dead Guy is a German-style Maibock made with Rogue's proprietary "PacMan" ale yeast. It is deep honey in color with a malty aroma, rich hearty flavor and a well balanced finish. Dead Guy is created from Northwest Harrington, Klages, Maier Munich and Carastan malts, along with Perle and Saaz Hops.
In the early 1990s Dead Guy Ale was created as a private tap sticker to celebrate the Mayan Day of the Dead (November 1st, All Souls Day) for Casa U Betcha in Portland, Oregon. The Dead Guy design proved popular and was incorporated into a bottled product a few years later with MaierBock as the elixir.

Nice looking beer, the body is a cloudy burnt orange that appeared to be almost glowing sitting in my mug, very little head was produced and that witch was vanished instantly leaving zero bubbles and lacing behind. The sent had a good amount of hops in it they didn’t overpower the smell, the rest of the aroma was made up of a floral honey, and as the beer got warmer a toffee like sent was noticeable, all together this brew smells great. Very clean taste nice and crisp and very refreshing, a good malty back bone with just the right amount of hops with just a touch of tomato soup, and what I think is some honey in the back ground. The mouth fell is also very crisp, strange how this beer had zero head but still had a good carbonation feeling going on. Great brew I would like to drink more of it if it wern’t for the rarity and price of the beer here in the great white north.

This reminds exactly of a double/imperial IPA but they have used a lot of dry hopping to bring out the aroma instead of massive amounts in the boil for bittering. There is quite a nice amount of bitter in the flavour but it’s not too bitter. The aroma really is nice and heavy, a strong waft of saaz. The flavour isn’t quite as strong as the aroma would lead you to believe. A very nice balance. I could definately enjoy a few of these consecutively.

Good beer. I liked the double dead guy ale a little bit better, but it is also steeper in price. I found this beer to have almost a dirty/earthy taste (not bad). It looks great out of the bottle and has a good bitter smell to it. The cascading hops help greatly with the appearance. Not going to be my ’everyday beer,’ but very good on occasion.

355 mL Bottle.Deep honey body with a frothy off-white head that settles to a tenacious film lacing the sides of the glass generously. Aroma is sweet malt, crystal malt, tangy hops, honey, and grapefruit rind. This beer has a sweet malty-nutty flavor with crystal malt and hop bitter expressing in the aftertaste followed by a nutty-hoppy-honey finish. Nice, smooth mouth feel. I like the Halloween motif on the label.

Enjoyed via 12oz bottle. Pours a medium golden color, darker than a pilsner, but lighter than an American Amber Ale. Based on the nose and palate, I almost lost my mind. I have enjoyed this beer on several occasions, and was extremely impressed by its latest incarnation. The nose is totally malt-forward, caramel, munich, and perhaps a little bit of American 2-row sweetness. Hops say, "Hello," but only to balance what would otherwise be a cloying sweetness. The finish is just to the malty side of center on the sweet/dry spectrum. Overall, extremely enjoyable. Well done!

Overall Impression: I have always really enjoyed this beer. I may be a bit high on it simply because this and Arrogant Bastard are the two beers that really got me into beer, but it is really good. Helped turn me from someone who enjoyed drinking beer into a beer lover...

Bottle. Pours a beautiful deep amber with a white head that doesn’t last too long but leaves good lacing. The aroma is quite light but the taste is lovely and complex. The hops stand out, as with a lot of Rogue ales, but there are subtle hints of honey, oak and citrus. Great label too.
