Presentation: 750mL bottle with a red coating. Served in a pint glass. Appearance: Two finger dark tan head that fizzles out rather quickly. Itís pretty much black in color and it leaves some good lacing. Smell: A sweet chocolate smell dominates, with some hints of roasted malt in the background. Taste: Tastes of dark and milk chocolate, with some smokiness from the roasted malt. Itís very sweet. Thereís some bitterness at the end but itís not really that noticeable. Mouthfeel: Thereís very little carbonation. Itís creamy, smooth, full bodied and rather strong. After drinking about half a glass it starts getting cloying because of the sweetness. Overall: Itís a sweet treat, best to have it in small doses. Youíll enjoy it a lot more if you pair it with any chocolate dessert, because by itself itíll just feel like too much sweetness after a while.

Glass on tap. Yeah itís amazing, and lives up to the hype. Just enough chocolate, thank god they added enough alcohol to balance it, NOT a session beer, super-viscous. No lacing, small head fades off. Yeah everything is perfect. Strong balanced mouthfeel. What a beaut.

UPDATED: AUG 19, 2014 Aroma is chocolate. Dark pour khaki head. Taste is chocolate and a bit off coffee. A little more carbonated than most. Lingering dark chocolate taste. Smooth and easy drinking. Good overall.

Pours a very dark brown with a light tan head leaving heavy lacing. Nice chocolate aroma with roasted malt nose. Mild chocolate flavor up front with notes of coffee and malt. Thinner mouthfeel for a stout but still a very good stout.

Into a snifter, the pour shows a nice jet black color in its initial appearance. The head had a tan one finger foamy head that dissipated at a nice pace leaving some light lacing here and there. The smell has a rich sticky sweet dark chocolate and allows a nice sweet milk chocolate coming in heavy. After the chocolates, a light roasty coffee comes in with a subtle vanilla which then is followed by a super light caramel aroma. The taste took all of these flavors and combined extremely nicely. On the palate, this one sat about a medium on the body with a sticky chocolate aftertaste and finish. Overall, this was a pretty good Double Stout Iíd have again.

Transfer from BA review on 10-13-12- Served on tap in a 10 oz snifter Appearance ĖServed a black brew with a small tan head. The head fades fast to a thin film leaving a great level of lacing on the sides of the glass. Smell Ė The aroma is rich and strong. It is heavy of a sweet mild chocolate smell. Mixed with these aromas are lighter notes of a vanilla and light caramel smell. Overall, big and delicious. Taste Ė The flavor starts out of a smooth semi-sweet chocolate flavor mixed with a roasted malt taste. Vanilla soon comes to the tongue and along with it some sweeter and more sugary flavors of caramel and molasses. While it comes to the tongue, the sweetness soon dwindles some as more roasted malt and a bitter chocolate flavor then come to the tongue. While not detected in the slightest in the nose, at the very end a light alcohol flavor comes to the tongue and leaves a very nice bitter chocolate booze flavor to linger on the tongue. Mouthfeel Ė The body of the beer was on the medium to more creamy side with a carbonation level that was rather average. It was an alright mouthfeel, although more creaminess and a bit less carbonation would have likely better suited the chocolate, roast and alcohol flavors of the brew. Overall Ė It is a rather tasty brew and the name is very appropriate. It begins with sweeter chocolate and then turns more to a bitter chocolate, with big dose of chocolate in the nose. It is tasty and well worth a try.

On tap at the SF taproom. It pours a jet black color with a tan/orange head. The aroma is very sweet chocolate milk shake with touches of vanilla. The flavor is velvety smooth with huge sweet chocolate, vanilla and a bitter dark chocolate and roasted finish. A massive chocolate beer.

December 17th, 2012 - Most chocolate based beers Iíve enjoyed over the years tend to slide somewhere on a spectrum between light chocolate and dark chocolate. These cause my brain to light up with crystal clear images of chocolate bars, half-dressed in wrappers, and layers of paper and foil shining in the artificial light of a grocery store. But Rogueís Double Chocolate Stout is one of the first to so directly and powerfully capture the unique chocolate flavor of brownies. And Iím talking about the regular kind from the box - the staple of suburbia sweet tooths everywhere, with an appealing chewiness that stops only at the edges of the pan, where the batter has burnt ever so slightly to give the edge bites a special contrast in flavors and texture. Thatís the smell from this evocative looking beer, with its hazy chocolate lab coat of color, and the almost comical flat-topped cone that protrudes from the top of a lighter brown head. Brownies are the only scent I can pick out, though it is good, and puts the chewy squares practically in my mouth. The taste is more nuanced, suggesting a particular species of brownie: the Trader Joeís salted brownie bites, with a light drizzle of caramel on top. Itís a lighter body with a healthy carbonation, and a nice malty base somewhere in the lower notes, but chocolate milk and brownies are the highlighted flavors here, with their sweetness masking any alcohol this beer might have. Serve this with dessert and a bowl of good quality vanilla ice cream and youíll have a lot of very satisfied guests for your dinner parties or dates.
