3.2 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20
Presentation: 750mL bottle with a red coating. Served in a pint glass.
Appearance: Two finger dark tan head that fizzles out rather quickly. It’s pretty much black in color and it leaves some good lacing.
Smell: A sweet chocolate smell dominates, with some hints of roasted malt in the background.
Taste: Tastes of dark and milk chocolate, with some smokiness from the roasted malt. It’s very sweet. There’s some bitterness at the end but it’s not really that noticeable.
Mouthfeel: There’s very little carbonation. It’s creamy, smooth, full bodied and rather strong. After drinking about half a glass it starts getting cloying because of the sweetness.
Overall: It’s a sweet treat, best to have it in small doses. You’ll enjoy it a lot more if you pair it with any chocolate dessert, because by itself it’ll just feel like too much sweetness after a while.

December 17th, 2012 - Most chocolate based beers I’ve enjoyed over the years tend to slide somewhere on a spectrum between light chocolate and dark chocolate. These cause my brain to light up with crystal clear images of chocolate bars, half-dressed in wrappers, and layers of paper and foil shining in the artificial light of a grocery store. But Rogue’s Double Chocolate Stout is one of the first to so directly and powerfully capture the unique chocolate flavor of brownies. And I’m talking about the regular kind from the box - the staple of suburbia sweet tooths everywhere, with an appealing chewiness that stops only at the edges of the pan, where the batter has burnt ever so slightly to give the edge bites a special contrast in flavors and texture. That’s the smell from this evocative looking beer, with its hazy chocolate lab coat of color, and the almost comical flat-topped cone that protrudes from the top of a lighter brown head. Brownies are the only scent I can pick out, though it is good, and puts the chewy squares practically in my mouth. The taste is more nuanced, suggesting a particular species of brownie: the Trader Joe’s salted brownie bites, with a light drizzle of caramel on top. It’s a lighter body with a healthy carbonation, and a nice malty base somewhere in the lower notes, but chocolate milk and brownies are the highlighted flavors here, with their sweetness masking any alcohol this beer might have. Serve this with dessert and a bowl of good quality vanilla ice cream and you’ll have a lot of very satisfied guests for your dinner parties or dates.

Poured from a growler from the generious Chudwick. Chocolate cough syrup. And now... To quote Gary Oldman in those cellphone commercials his agent suckered him in to blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah.

Let me tell you about the taste. Ever had cherry cough syrup? This is right up there. This beer is as shitty as my day has been: so we just bought a car and replaced our A/C unit including the furnace in the last month. We have a kid on the way and that shit ain’t cheap. So there’s that going on. Today we call about a leaky pipe that is related to the furnace installation. Dude shows up and says we need a new water heater. As this is going on, the cable guy, the fucking old cable guy who moves a mile a year, decides to show up and repair a problem that is not affecting me. In the process knocks out the cable and internet. In short, no soccer, no USA Belgium. On the bright side the water heater is under warranty and I’m stuck in call center hell between whirlpool and Lowes. FML.

Bottle from Bier Huis, Ossett. 9.0%. Very dark, clear, cola colour. Thin, tan head. Chocolate milkshake. Dark chocolate. Dried fruit. Caramel. Vanilla. Booze. Taste is dry. Light sweet. Light bitter. Palate is surprisingly airy. Smooth, too. Finish is dry, chocolatey sweet, with light, nutty bitterness. Really good, and a lot more restrained than I expected. So glad this is a huge bottle...

Black pour with a thick brown head. Strong chocolate aroma. Sweet chocolate flavour with some slight coffee notes as well. Thick texture to it but a very nice chocolate stout.
