Commercial Description:
JLS Release #34: Double Dead Guy ~ initially released in kegs for JLS accounts, this new elixir will be launched in 750 ml ceramic bottles in the spring of 2008! D2 (our nickname for Double Dead Guy) is a new reincarnation of Rogue's classic Dead Guy Ale. Mahogany in color, full bodied with an amazing mid-palette richness of toffee and caramel. The hops are evident also, with just enough to keep the maltiness in check. The finish lasts > 15 seconds!! D2 is Double the Fun! Malts: 2-row Pale, Munich, C15. Hops. Cascade for boil (because John was out pf Perle) and Crystal for aroma (because John was out of Sterling ...) IBU's approx 50-60. 19.8 Plato Original Gravity, 4.9 Plato Terminal Gravity.

Copper/ amber colour with a off white head. Malty floral aroma with hints of light pine and citrus. Taste is floral, pine and citrus hops with a touch of malt. An obvious; by the name, like drinking 2 Dead Guy Ales at once.

Smells just like the ingredients on the bottle, no surprises. A very nice golden bronw and red, I haven’t seen anything that looks quite the same. Very nice head and the bubbles last just like a glass of champagne. Flavour is also just as the ingredients prescribe, middle maltiness, a fairly strong hop presence but it all goes to balance 9%. A great beer.

Despite my disdain for bottles with opaque packaging (I like to be able to see the product inside) I decided to give this one a shot. Nice straight amber color with a golden tint. Massive BIG head from a medium pour. Great retention. Excellent lacing. Not alot going on in the nose, here. Slight sweet caramel malt notes. Minimal citrus hop notes detected. More of the same in the taste. A little bit of citrus hops flavor. A tiny bit of malt sweetness attempts to bring balance. Quite the bitter aftertaste. An oddly musty overtone that made me question the cleanliness of my glass to the point that I just went and washed it and opened a second bottle. Still tastes the same. Nice medium body. Not too watery. This is where this brew actually relates to a dopplebock. Sorry, but I can’t get passed the mustiness in this one. Together with the fact that there just isn’t alot going on in here. Won’t be rushing out to buy more of these.

Reddish amber with a medium-sized off-white head. Good lacings. Leafy and grassy hop aromas and fruity notes that are quite pleasant. Bready malts, fudge and earthy aromas. The smell is kind of weird - not very powerful yet out of focus, but still decent. Malty and sweet in the mouth. Mostly white bread with notes of bark and fudge. Hints of earth and boiled vegetables. Some hop notes, mostly with a leafy and grassy character. A taste of caramel in the middle, which gets enhances towards the end. The finish is rather bitter with a hint of minerals, peppery hops and sweet herbal alcohol. I’m not impressed by the taste, it’s unbalanced with a strange composition. Quite a big body with a creamy texture. Medium carbonation. The mouthfeel is really good, but for some reason it doesn’t go very well with the flavors. I didn’t really like this one. It came out a bit strange to me. It’s not very powerful, yet it’s unbalanced. Considering the hefty price tag on it, it was quite a letdown. Serving type: bottle (Copy of old Beer Advocate review)

Pours a hazy golden color with a foamy white head. Nose of resin, earth, sweet malt and caramel. The initial taste is sweet caramel, fruits, resin and earth from the aroma, backed by a nice hop rich character. Full bodied. Average head retention. Decently balanced.

Pours hazy with a tall white head. Smells very yeasty and bready. Like a good bock. The flavour is very basic and old world tasting. When youy drink it it is like being in a time machine. It is very rich and malty soo full flavoured. Great hoppy aroma and finish. Perfectly balanced. This is a fantastic beer. Just blows my mind. It is everything you wish the normal dead guy was.

Large bottle from De Molen shop 09. Hazy orange brown colour, with a lasting thin beige head. Roasted hop and sweetish malt aroma. A little sweet in the mouth maybe, but I thought hugely drinkable and completely belied the 9.5% ABV. I’ve had beers of lower ABV that tasted so much more of alcohol. I know some people who think Rogue beers are rough and badly brewed and too sweet and too obvious, but you know what? I like that about them. I want a big hoppy alcoholic American Strong and I love this brewer for giving me what I want. Yes, it has too much sweetness on the swallow, and the hop is more burnt than bitter, but hell. I love it. Bit thin on the malts if I’m being brutally honest. It’s a bit like a big stadium rock band, you know what you are going to get, you know something smaller and more bijou would be a better gig, but you still come away with a big grin and singing embarrassing songs.
