COBeer (18), Boston, Massachusetts, USA May 18, 2009 Rich, toffee flavor. Some notes of oak, a big beer not to be taken lightly Cletus (5001), Connecticut, USA May 16, 2009 Draught sample at Delaneys. Pours coper/gold with a white head. Smells of roses, some pepper, citrus, resiny. Tastes sweet and malty with a rosey finish. porterhouse (1148), Alna, Maine, USA May 11, 2009 (750 ml bottle (2008) from Kappy’s) Pours lightly hazy darkish amber with two fingers of light yellowish amber head. Aroma of thick caramel and toffee, quite malty, almost like a doppelbock. Hops (pine, sweat) are also prevalent in aroma, making it less like a doppel. Mouthfeel fairly thick, fairly smooth except a touch pebbly. Fairly heavy rings and sheets of lacing. Flavor of caramel and toffee, maybe some licorice, hints of honey and hay, esp. as it warms. Piney, bitter hops jab at the palate and sort of fight with the malt making this a bit of a confused beer. Lingering bitter aftertaste with some sweaty and piney overtones. Not really bad but I’m not quite sure what to make of it. Seems like they had the basis for a pretty good bock here and then starting messing around. ABV well-covered. cbeers21 (563), Miami, Florida, USA May 11, 2009 NIce rubyish pour. Cardboard and dusty malts are evident with a carmel toffe chewyness. Raspy voice on this guy, seems a little rough around the edges I would suppose. Finishes rather nicely with a fruity twang and some lingering rye wheaty bitterness. Overall not too bad and rather quenching. The alcohol is sneaky in this one. puggy211 (576), cordova, Tennessee, USA May 10, 2009 Dark amber, darker than expected. Medium head. Toffee and some fruitiness in the nose. Very sweet with lots of toffee and caramel. A touch of butterscotch. Faintly bitter at the finish. Drinkable but not something Id get excited about Jerre (1755), Waregem, Belgium May 9, 2009 Good lokking bottle. Thx to Glenn @ Alvinne.
Hazy amber color, with a white head. Aroma sweet, hops.
Medium body.
Taste like an IPA, some caramel, sweet and malts, alcohol touch. yemenmocha (344), Glendale, Arizona, USA May 6, 2009 This is not a dopplebock. The brewery even says it is a strong ale.
Anyway, pour is a hazy dark amber color with tan head. Nose has overripe melon aromas with some malt extract like components that reminds me of the extract I always used in homebrewing - big caramel.
Palate is quite alcoholic/hot, even at cold temperatures. There is a notable toffee malt flavor with big hops to balance, but it is nothing in the league of a doppelbock. It is a freak and needs a new name. tupalev (2605), Toronto, Ontario, Canada May 5, 2009 Bottle, thanks C & K! Love the bottle itself. Looks good - deep orange, nice creamy white head. Good aroma - spicy, sweet, and even floral. Taste is decent - very sweet, a little spicy, some alcohol. Some hops in the finish too. Comes off as a bit too syrupy sweet, but drank cold this is negated somewhat. Good, but does not make me want another one. Thanks for the east coast pick up though C & K!
