mtjoseph (36), Murderapolis, Minnesota, USA Feb 4, 2009 Bomber, 2008. Dark orange pour reminiscent of stained wood. Aroma of booze, sweet fruits, and bread. Flavor very heavy on the roasted malt with a long lasting bitterness on the palate. I’m not really a fan of the American strong ale style, but I found this to be very accessible (as most Rogue beers are to people getting into micros). A much less complex beer compared to any of the stone bastard beers. Miksu (2194), Jyväskylä, Finland Feb 1, 2009 Draught at Stockholm Beer Festival 2008. Amber color. Toffeish, fruity and orangey aroma. Malty, toffeish, caramelly and fruity flavor with apricot and watermelon. Very rich, soft and drinkable. Rastacouere (5552), Montréal, Quebec, Canada Jan 25, 2009 I quite enjoy the regular dead guy and got to try the double with great enthusiasm. Unfortunately, the delicious and unexagerated honeyed toastiness of the dead guy is lost here, so are its generous floral hops. We do get a herbal hop twist towards the finish, but the nose is dominated by heavy cereals. The alcohol presence is strong all throughout. Bready and honey-like chewy malts and strong alcohol make for a beer that loses all of dead guy’s regular drinkability without gaining in complexity.
Gachupines (290), USA Jan 24, 2009 Basically very similar to Dead Guy Ale, but with a stronger hop presence. Not very hoppy itself, just in comparison to the normal Dead Guy. Overall, a little sweet, and strong malt flavor. I found it interesting, but I’m not loving it. luv2brew (177), Chesterfield, Virginia, USA Jan 24, 2009 nose comes off as extreme maltiness.Huge soft white head that tends to stick around for a while. Very sweet and somewhat complex. It does have a lasting bitterness at the end.. It comes off a little flat . All around an ok beer jeremytoni (1072), Swedesboro, New Jersey, USA Jan 24, 2009 From the tap poured a dark brown with a fair amount of head. Sweet malty flavor with a lingering finish. SFLpunk (132), South Burlington, Vermont, USA Jan 22, 2009
Painted red 750mL bottle with 2008 vintage date.
Appearance: Thick, almost frothy tan head with small bubbles. Thin, but solid layer of head remains after 45 seconds and some lacing on the pint glass. Medium-amber color.
Nose: Hops and a raisony-sweetness are my first thoughts. Maybe a hint of currant, and apricot. Something like Dulce de leche or maybe condensed milk (without the "ew, gross, it’s condensed milk from a can" smell).
Palate: Softer carbonation than I thought based on the head. A smooth, medium-bodied mouth-feel. Nicely bitter when agitated to reveal classic Rogue hop characteristics. The hops still have that delicate floral flavor, which I appreciate. Midpalate is nicely sweet, but not cloying, and is countered by a bitter bite right before the medium-length finish.
Notes: A solid "double" version of the Dead Guy Ale, not quite as extreme as I was anticipating, what with the bizarre packaging. Worth a try and I’ll definitely want more of this one! craftbeerdesign (731), Alpharetta, Georgia, USA Jan 17, 2009 draft at Summits in Cumming, GA. a deep golden / orange with a quarter inch white head. solid hop aroma... big soft and creamy palate with big floral hop notes up front and through the finish. the presence over the tongue is really great - huge body - almost chewy. XX Dead Guy is very enjoyable and a solid hop filled ale, but not over the top like some IIPAs... this is very well balanced with the malts lingering in the background. It’s overpriced in the bottle, so I was happy to find it on draft to try it out.
