KingpinIPA (842), Milwaukee, Wisconsin, USA Dec 20, 2008 Got this one for a steal for only $3.99. Original price was 9.99. Dark, golden reddish brown color. Smell of hops, caramel, spice, fruit, malt, bread, nuts, alcohol and brown sugar. Tastes the same and it was a nice go to sleep beer. Gethinbeer (993), Nova Scotia, Canada Dec 18, 2008 From bottle. Aroma of syrup, nuts and caramel. Seems a well crafted ale just from the first hints of aroma. Once in the glass this beer looks tasty. Copper in colour with a tall frothy head, clinging to the glass. Great flavour of hops. hints of spice and fruit. Great bitterness the hops give to this ale. seems like quality and I really enjoyed this one. For the strength of this ale it went down a treat. fonefan (10868), VestJylland, Denmark Dec 18, 2008 Draught @ STBOWF. Stockholm Beer Festival 2008, Sweden. Clear medium orange amber color with a small to average, frothy, good lacing, mostly diminishing, off-white head. Aroma is moderate malty, caramel, fruity, light alcohol. Flavor is moderate to light heavy sweet and moderate bitter with a average to long duration. A very nice balance beer. Body is medium, texture is oily, carbonation is soft, finish feel is light alcoholic. [260908] haddon90 (1034), Alexandria, Virginia, USA Dec 17, 2008 Bottle. Clear copper pour with an off-white head. Heavy malt aroma with hints of fruit. Sweet taste, went down smoother then expected. Some caramel is definitely noticeable in this one. Great balance as well. Light bitter finish. hayduke (1619), Eureka, California, USA Dec 16, 2008 Presentation: This was a 750 ml bright red ceramic bottle with a regular cap on top. It was handsome, but I am pretty sure I paid a premium price just for the bottle. But without a swing top cap you can’t really even reuse the bottle. I supposed a bottle collector might like one but you are unlikely to purchase more than one of these unless the beer was truly amazing. So lets find out.
Appearance: Poured a dark orange with a medium sized tan head that left moderate lacing on the sides of the glass.
Nose: This smells strongly of caramel malts and ripe tropical fruits like mango and payaya, along with some grassy hops. The aromas overall are very inviting.
Flavor: The taste is strong in the malts, along with the ripe fruit. The finish is long and mildly bitter, and you can taste the alcohol there as well.
Mouthfeel: This is smooth on the palate, and full bodied.
Overall: This is not just a high alcohol Dead Guy, but seems like a different beer entirely. As I suspected, if it were not for having to pay a premium price for that silly ceramic bottle I would probably buy more of this. If they put this out in a regular bottle I would drink it again.
aracauna (2357), Georgia, USA Dec 14, 2008 This one comes out with a huge caramel malty aroma. I am actually not sure I have ever had a beer with a more aromatic malt. Wow. The flavor is not bad either, but it does not quite match up to the aroma. Hops are a little more reserved than expected. elihapa (1033), Honolulu, California, USA Dec 13, 2008 Last beer in tasting. Appears orange with a creamy tan head. Aroma is heavy on sweet fruit and malt. In terms of flavor, overall I found this brew to be too predictable. It was a sweet malt bomb that finishes with malt and fruit. Generally, I can pick up any Lagunitas strong ale and find this combo. Decent and tasty, but I expected better. Maria (6056), Thisted, Denmark Dec 13, 2008 2008 Version. It is a slightly hazy, red copper color and the head is huge, golden and creamy. The aroma has notes of spruce, mango, caramel and papaya. The flavour has sweetness and notes of spruce, caramel, mango, citrus and a nice, dry bitterness and a long finish.
