JLS Release #34: Double Dead Guy ~ initially released in kegs for JLS accounts, this new elixir will be launched in 750 ml ceramic bottles in the spring of 2008! D2 (our nickname for Double Dead Guy) is a new reincarnation of Rogue’s classic Dead Guy Ale. Mahogany in color, full bodied with an amazing mid-palette richness of toffee and caramel. The hops are evident also, with just enough to keep the maltiness in check. The finish lasts > 15 seconds!! D2 is Double the Fun! Malts: 2-row Pale, Munich, C15. Hops. Cascade for boil (because John was out pf Perle) and Crystal for aroma (because John was out of Sterling ...) IBU’s approx 50-60. 19.8 Plato Original Gravity, 4.9 Plato Terminal Gravity.

On tap at Tapwerks. Pours a near clear orangish amber with a near white head that dissipates to the edges. Aroma has notes of sweet grains and toffee with a bit of earthiness backing. Flavor is similar with more earthiness supported by caramel and toffee.

Poured from tap to glass. Dark amber hue with white head that dissipates to a thin ring. Aroma is malt, candi sugar, raisins, pepper hops. Mouthfeel is nice with a full body and light carbonation. Taste is sweet initially with a bitter following and dry ethanol finish. Overall this is a good Barleywine type brew.

Cloudy dark brownish-yellow. Creamy head. Aroma Is hoppy, smoke, light citrus. Taste is sharp , woody, smoke, light fruit....more apple-pearish than the citrus in the nose. Feel is creamy and lively at the same time. Smooth sipping. A nice beer. Smoother than I remember the regular dead guy. Yeah, baseball is back.

Red amber with off-white head. Aroma is strong toffee, alcohol, some bread, some spice and some floral notes. Very slick mouth feel with medium carbonation. Aftertaste is dry floral, burnt caramel, alcohol and spice. Long aftertaste. Overall: Very nice, but not the most complex aroma.

FROM NOTES: November 8, 2013. A: Heavy bready malt aroma and a nice caramel sweetness. Mixed with these are lighter aromas of a floral and herbal nature as well as a lighter citrus hop smell. Faint fig notes. A: Pours a hazy orange-red almost sunrise-like color with almost no head. T: Follows the nose, although not quite as sweet. Nice and malty with subdued spices and fruits with a nice hop bitterness to round everything off. Alcohol is well hidden. M: Medium bodied with moderate carbonation. O: Overall, a good heavy almost barley-wine like and bitter brew. If you like Dead Guy, you’ll undoubtedly like Double Dead Guy

22 Oz. Bottle. Reddish amber with small head, Aroma is big malts and hops. This is my opinion is a hoppier (if that’s a word) version of their regular Dead Guy Ale; Never the less a very nice beer.

So average its just painful to score. Big malts, hops, medium to full bodied, dark red, strong carbonation, some dark fruit. Nothing really interesting.

750 ml bottle into tulip glass, no bottle dating. Moderate gusher upon opening. Pours hazy deep orange copper color with a 2 finger dense light khaki head with good retention, that reduces to a small cap that lingers. Spotty soapy lacing clings around the glass, with some light streaming carbonation. Aromas of big raisin, pear, apple, caramel, toast, toffee, brown sugar, biscuit, nuttiness, herbal, floral, light pepper, and toasted earthiness. Very nice aromas with good balance and complexity of dark/bready malt and fruity yeast notes; with good strength. Taste of big raisin, pear, apple, caramel, toast, toffee, brown sugar, biscuit, nuttiness, light pepper, floral, herbal, and toasted earthiness. No bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of raisin, pear, apple, caramel, toast, toffee, brown sugar, biscuit, nuttiness, light pepper, herbal, and toasted earthiness on the finish for a while. Very nice balance and complexity of dark/toasty malt and fruity yeast ester flavors; with big robustness and zero cloying sweetness after the finish. Medium carbonation and medium-full bodied; with a moderately creamy and slick mouthfeel that is nice. Alcohol is very well hidden with minimal warming present after the finish. Overall this is a damn nice strong ale. All around good balance, robustness, and complexity of dark/bready/nutty malt and fruity yeast flavors; and very smooth to sip on for the ABV. A very enjoyable offering.
